As far as I can see there 97 townlands surrounding Ballinasloe. there is Dunlo, Dunlo Hill and Dunlo Street.I have a booklet callled Ballinsloe in the days that have been compiled by Noel Farrell with the census for 1901, 1`911 and griffiths valuation etc. It mentioned two books that are a must for anyone wishing to find out about Ballinasloe's history. The Parish of Ballinasloe, its History by Patrick K. egan and innue agus inne by Tadhg Mac Lochlann. It says that both can be purchased locally (ie Ballinasloe). It does not say whether this was the civilparish or otherwise. All I can say from personal experience is that the only time people put down the correct townland is when they vote and fill in the census or apply fro planning permission. The voting register is compiled using the townlands we are familiar with. Otherwise people are notoriously inaccurate when putting down the place of birth. They may put down the nearest well known area . As far as researchers are concerned it might as well be Hy-Brasil or the Yellow Brick Road. With the possibility of postcodes being brought in soon there is a chance that people might have to be slightly more accurate. There were a lot of reasons why people with non local names might be in Ballinasloe. There was the assylum ,the military encampment the estates and various other orgaisations in the area. I found a Margaret Conway working as a draper in no 7 Dunlo Hill in the 1901 census. I did not lokk in the 97 townlands surrounding the town.
