Listers - I do some transcriptions of records from Scotland. The parish records are very hard to read unless you know the names of the families in the parish. I would suggest you read the original parish records. We are not paid to do transcriptions; its all voluntary. We try our best, but many times there are no people to go back after our work and make sure we got it right. Also, many times the parish clerk got it wrong. My own experience was the parish clerk wrote down the wrong surname of the mother for one of my ancestors. After much research, I realized that the parish clerk wrote down the surname of the wife of one of the witnesses to a baptism. So, there were many chances for an error. If you study paleography, you realize that many times an "o" looks like an "e" or vice versa. Also, an "H" may look like another letter of the alphabet. Most names were written out as they sounded (phonics). Unless you go back to the original record, there may be much confusion, and even then there were errors. Look for other Flaherty's in the records, and maybe you'll be able to figure out who made the error and what it should read. I recently contacted the National Archives in London and suggested a transcriber had made the error of putting in a given name of Helena instead of Elenor. Its tough.
