Peter - I am still researching and trying to clarify whereabout of my Irish Ancestors... but I can say I know for certain that with my Polish ancestors, my great grandfather came first and settled in America. Yes, my great grandfather had to come and live with another family member -albeit distant, but "family" - in America. My great grandmother and their two children came years later.... Hope that helps.
