Dear [email protected], >From the England 1911 Census I have found out that my grandfather, Edward Charles Howell, was born in Galway. Edward's date of birth is 13 May, 1885. Edward's mother Agnes Howell, formally Cambridge and herself born in Athlone in 1859, a daughter of Master Gunner Daniel Cambridge VC, Yeoman of the Guard, was a Certified Teacher and she taught in Army Garrison Schools in Ireland in the 1880's and 1890's. I can only find one reference to a Garrison in County Galway, and that is at Renmore, Galway City. The only reason I have for Agnes, her husband Charles William Howell and their daughter May (born 1882 in Woolwich, Kent) being in Galway for the birth of grandfather Edward is for Agnes to have been a teacher there, and hence my assumption at Renmore. I found a fascinating document on t'internet of the origins of Renmore Golf Club, which includes an Ordnance map of the Barracks and its environs showing the Garrison's School, Hospital and Roman Catholic Church - http://www.galwaygolf.com/historyFiles/chapter1/Chapter%201.pdf And looking at GoogleEarth the School and Hospital buildings still exists, as does the Church, construction of which I understand began in 1884. The Church continues as the Garrison Church today. So my thoughts at the moment are if Agnes did indeed teach at Renmore Garrison then her son Edward, my grandfather, may have been born in the Garrison Hospital and christened in the Garrison Church if the building and consecration of the Church had been completed by mid May 1885. If this be so then Edward would have been one of the first to be christened there. I have written to the Curator at the Military Museum//, Dun Ui Mhaoiliosa, Renmore Barracks, and I await his/her response in the greatest of anticipation. Meanwhile, I will be extremely and eternally grateful if anyone can point me towards other sources of information in Galway which may help me to confirm my grandfather's place of birth.
