Which Civil parish in Galway is of the most interest to the greatest number of subscribers to this mail list? Just a parish name - that's all I need, no surnames, no bits of family history......... Well, you could call this a roll call - in which case - put the name of the civil parish first on the subject line, then the surname or surnames that you are interested in. In the body of the mail, put the parish name on the first line - that's all I'm going to look at for the moment. Below that, write what you know about your ancestor who left that parish - then, people interestd in that surname will be able to read what you have to say Please and thanks. Jane
I only know the surnames & the town they came from. I don't know the parish or civil parish for any of them.. So, How would I find that out? Portumna Not sure of Parish, but think this is a great idea of your's Jane. Looking for Maria Clarke, possibly born Portumna, circa 1824 (or any other Maria Clarke born County Galway between 1817 and 1825). Maria's parents were probably John and Eliza Clarke. She was a free emigrant to New South Wales around 1850, sponsored by a Richard Clarke (a relative ??). She subsequently married William Ruffles, but after he died a few years later she had a family with my gt gt grandfather, convict James Saisell (Saysell). I haven't found anything more on Maria, as yet, nor on her parents or Richard Clarke. Any help will be greatfully appreciated. Kinvarradoorus I don't know the name of the RC parish. Maybe someone on this list can help me find which RC church I should be looking for records from (and where to find the records, if you know)? Mary Ellen Philips was born in Kinvarra on 30 Apr 1876 to Richard Holmes Philips (born c.1854) and Lucy Burke (born c.1859). I know this from immigrant papers in the US. Richard and Lucy moved to London when Mary Ellen was an infant and she stayed in Ireland (she was too sickly to move), living with her grandmother, Ellen Burke (maiden name unknown). Mary Ellen finally moved to London to join her parents when she was 15 years old. I know from family stories that Ellen Burke was a widow by 1881. Mary Ellen is the first of my ancestors to be researched in Ireland and I've put all the information that I know in this email. I'm not finding as much information online as I've found for Canada & England. I'm not sure of the best way to proceed to find out about this Irish family. I would appreciate advice from anyone who would care to offer it. What should I do first? Thanks, Sue Poirier -----Original Message----- From: Jane Lyons PhD.
