    3. Theresa, On the assumption that this precise date and place of birth are correct, and because it is after 1864 (when registration of BDM started), and on the assumption that the birth was registered (some were not), you have all you need to contact the Galway registrar of BDM for a copy of the birth register entry or birth certificate. That's Supt. Registrar of B.D.M. Western Health Board 25 Newcastle Road Galway City, Co. Galway Ireland and you might want to call them beforehand at +00353 (91) 523122 (that's the WHB switchboard) to check that they have the register for the 4th quarter of 1868. I don't want to speak for them but - because you have such an exact date and place - if there is a bit of a lull at the office they might even take a quick look in the register while you wait on the phone and tell you whether they have the entry you need and, if so, how much money to send for the copy. Re. sending the money: the copy of a certificate is €6.95 and that of a register entry ca. €3. What I do is simply put a €5 or €10 (or whatever) note in an envelope and ask them to put the change in the charity box in their office. It's much simpler than sending a money order and everyone's happy with the arrangement. Pádraig (the Paddy that was) P.S. This suggestion only applies to this kind of situation where one has a precise date and place. The records are not yet computerised so requests for "the date of death of my g-g-grandfather who died somewhere in Galway after 1864" are likely to get short shrift. To quote the GRO re. genealogical searches (and I assume the same applies to the Supt.Registrar's office, "the office does not have the staffing levels or resources to engage in this type of activity. We are solely concerned with the administration of the civil registration system in Ireland." Just thought I'd add that caveat FWIW. P(tPtw). System firewalled with ZoneAlarm Pro, regularly caulked with Microsoft Critical Updates and scanned with AdAware and Spy Sweeper. System and outgoing e-mails scanned with automatically-updated Norton Antivirus 2002. And a hearty thank-you to those who take similar precautions and thereby prevent their address books from being hijacked and used to send me spam, viruses, worms, scumware and other undesirable stuff. -----Original Message----- From: IRL-GALWAY-L-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:IRL-GALWAY-L-request@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of tesmith40@comcast.net Sent: 17 December 2004 18:54 To: IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GALWAY] Re: Latter Day Saints Vital records index Joan, What dates are covered on this? I would be interested in learning more about my great grandfather; an EDWARD NELLY or NALLY born in Gort (Beagh Parish), County Galway about Nov 1868 (source 1900 US Census for Estherville Twp) or Dec. 7, 1868 as per his death certificate. He is the son of Margaret (Joynt) & Patrick Nelly.
