Currently I am building family trees for the book. I would like to ask what additional sources could I use to find family members AND their contact information? I have used: a.. Burke's Landed Gentry b.. Some census records, but I am open to more sources c.. Books d.. RootsWeb.com, FamilyTree.com, Genealogy.com (any other genealogical databases???) e.. Parish Records f.. Some museum and library archives, but I am open to more sources Any additional sources is greatly appreciated. I am researching both the UK and the USA. Please note that not all family members have the surname Ismay. There are many female decents who married. Very Sincerely, Teri L. Judy (and all), Thanks for your help and pointers. I have questions (and comments) about a few of the websites for those on the list who may have used them. I'm not much of a genealogist, so many of my comments may come from my lack of understanding of how to use some of these tools. Please be patient. www.familysearch.org (LDS Church website) - I've found some very good info here including the 1880 US census. A lot of the other records seem to be "stand-alone." That is, one relationship only. It seems difficult to string these pieces of information together. Is there a "best way" to use this site? I've also noticed that many of the records are "as submitted" by members of the church and their authenticity or accuracy are not necessarily know. http://www.familyhistory.ie/ (Genealogy Society of Ireland) - I don't fully understand this site. There doesn't seem to be any search capability. There is a subscription available. Does anyone have this subscription? Is it worth your while? http://www.irishorigins.com/ (Irish Origins, http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/ - I've paid for their services myself and haven't found them to be a particularly good value. You really have to know what it is you're signing up for. In my naiveté I purchased some records and ended up with very little useful information. Lots of general information and almost no detail. Still I think I've seem more than one person on this list recommend this site. What am I doing wrong? (Ireland.com, http://www.famineshiprecords.com/ (Irish Emigration Project) - This one sounded great, but the web site is down (they say for security reasons) as of December 2004. It says to check back in a couple of weeks. They are also a pay-for site (free initial search, then some cost for details). Has anyone used them? Are they worth the money? http://www.nli.ie/fr_servfamily.htm (The National Library of Ireland) - I'm a little overwhelmed by this one. Without spending too much time with it, I would guess there is nothing you can search on-line. It would appear to be a great resource for preparing for a physical trip to the National Library. Did I get this about right? http://www.irelandoldnews.com/ (Ireland Newspaper Abstracts) - I love this site. A ton of fine articles on-line with a good search engine. Even if they haven't helped with my family history, they are fun to read. Thanks, Rick Haverty
Dear Judy, I apologize for the delay in thanking you. You have been very kind in replying to my query for additional sources for my research. I thank you very kindly for that. I have plenty of exciting work ahead with the sites you have given me. I shall visit them as time permits. Seems I am spending more time devising emails at the moment than anything else. This weekend I will have more time for actual research. Having dial up doesn't help speed research, lol. Thanks again Judy, for posting these links. And yes, they were very helpful. I was able to visit the newspaper abstracts briefly and found an article I loved. Time will see what the rest has in store.
