I have a question re. my father's family surname PAGE. Each time I enter that name into the search area at the Irish Family History Foundation website, the results not only include the name PAGE, but also GILL, MAGILL, MCGILL and various other spellings of the GILL surname. I can understand and appreciate variant results of whatever surname has been entered, but the surnames GILL and PAGE seems, to me, to be totally unrelated. Can anyone give me an explanation or some ideas as to the how these two names might be connected? Thanks. Allison Page Hockman
According to Edward MacLysaght, "The Surnames of Ireland": "Page This English name, in Ireland since the sixteenth century, and in a few isolated cases earlier, is well known is east Galway as well as in Ulster, where it is gaelicized as Mac Giolla." The meaning of "Page" and "Giolla" are basically the same (English - page boy, servant, right hand man) Gaelic / Irish (Giolla was a horse - man/servant) Finbarr O'Regan www.athenry.org -----Original Message----- From: irl-galway-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-galway-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Allison Hockman Sent: 28 February 2011 16:15 To: IRL-GALWAY@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-GALWAY] Question re. surname PAGE I have a question re. my father's family surname PAGE.
