Hurray for the list! Thanks for all the bits and pieces and to Cathy in particular for not only giving another Boston Pilot text that confirms the guesses of other listers and but also went into other records. I am so used to Mayo RC records that start too late to be helpful that I'm not sure I would have looked. The Darby Tuohy marriage--quite a find. Although the other variations sound more Irish, I do think it's a strong clue. I always assumed that the 2nd Mary's passage was paid by her cousin Mary in Iowa because her parents stayed behind and died in Ireland, which prompted her cousin, who left too young to have known her, to work to earn Mary #2's passage. I have a note that she arrived in 1868. A Mary Hickey is listed as a domestic servant, age 20 (looking at later censuses I think she was born in May, 48) in Palo Alto Twp, Newton P.O., Jasper Co., Iowa--5 farms away from the James and Hannah Tuohy Hickey family. Mary #2 married just-immigrated Daniel 'Hara in 1871 (according to the census) and had first son Cornelius in 1873, settled then or before in Monroe Co, IA, where RC records show further children: Mary E. (died young). Patrick, Kate, May and Daniel. I'm not familiar enough with Irish Catholic naming patterns to know whether this gives clues to William and James's (and perhaps a sister Honore's) parents. James had daughters Mary Bell, Margaret Ellen, Elizabeth Theresa ("Lida"), Honora ("Nora"--who believed she was named for a Hickey aunt) and then William and James, the two male names in the next generation as well. I appreciate all the help, and the variations of Darby, which puzzled me. I have to admit that I haven't looked at the Hickey-Tuohy Irish origins since so many internet resources have become available but follow the Galway list as it is so informative. Finding the Boston Pilot ad was a fluke. You've given me great leads and now I have a lot of homework to do! Dear Julie I think I can resolve the Rosmore problem for you. I went back to the Boston Pilot Books - fortunately I have an original set. I presume you found the entry online? Well, that is where the error lies. There is NO mention of Ballinahinch Barony, Clifden PLU etc in the original advert. Just Rossmore, Ballynakill parish, Galway. The extra detail was presumably added by the computer programme in some way. In this case, I am sure they have the wrong Ballinakill. As Diane pointed out previously, there was a John and a Mary Tuohy farming in Rosmore, Ballinakill, Leitrim barony. Also a Pat, David and John Hickey in the same townland. Added to that: There was a Darby Tuohy marriage in 1823, local RC parish of Woodford, Just the right sort of date to have a son Darby bc 1829 (age 25 in the advert), or he may have been a nephew. Whatever, a family name, surely? There was also a William Hickey who married in Woodford RC in 1853 - maybe the brother ? And if you take a look at Discovery map 53, you will see that Rosmore today has a pier on the banks of Lough Derg. The lough eventually flows into the River Shannon at Limerick. You said the family believed James and William had boats on the Shannon, and Rosmore townland would definitely fit that scenario. If you look at the IGI - just enter Hickey and Galway- you will get about 140 entries. A great many are submitted records covering the same Woodford/Portumna PLU areas, so there may be some connections there. The name Darby occurs a few times. ( I was unable to find any children with father William in the IGI - after 1864 of course. I tried a few common first names on brsgenealogy, but same result. Did he join his brother in the US, perhaps?) Hope this is useful. Cathy
Julie writes: === Co. Galway, Parish Ballynakill, Townland Rossmore, Barony Ballynahinch, Union Clifden. === Julie, This is interesting....but, as you know by now, there is no Rossmore there. It's fortunate that you had the barony and PLU also, as there are 4 Ballynakill civil parish areas within Co. Galway - separated as they are in different baronies. The one you want is, of course, near Clifden. There is no Rossmore there, although there is a Ross townland out on the Ross peninsula extending into Ballynakill Harbour, about 5 miles due north of Clifden town. I have some information on the owners of the former Ross House in the townland, but no names like Toohy (Graham, Prior and then Armstrong-Lushington-Tulloch). The only other somewhat-similar townland in the civil parish would be Rosroe townland, on the southern entrance point to Killary Harbour, about a dozen miles NE of Clifden town. There is a Rosmore in the Ballynakill civil parish in Leitrim barony and Loughrea or Portumna PLU........ a long way from Clifden (about as far away as you could be, and still be in the county [gr]). I don't see anything else which might fit. Sorry. Pete - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Pete Schermerhorn, in the glorious Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts </HTML>
I just have a couple of comments about the names you mentioned. First, Darby can be used interchangeably with the following names: Jeremiah, Diarmaid, Dermot and even Demetrius according to http://fhr.kiwicelts.com/Research/Gen_Nicknames.html. Although I personally have not seen the last one (Demetrius) used in civil records, maybe it appears in Latinized church records? Also, I have seen Toohy spelled several ways, including Tuohy, Tuohey, Touhy and Touhey. I'm sure researchers tracing Tuoheys can give other more far-fetched spelling examples! Congratulations on your new-found information and good luck in pursuing it! Geralyn On 2/28/2010 4:35 PM, Juliana Mulroy wrote: > I've been stuck there for 30 years. The Griffith's index on failteromhat.com shows John and Mary Tuohy in Rosmore, Ballynakill. Diane
Deaar listers, According to family tradition, James Hickey and his brother William had boats on the River Shannon. James married Hannah Tuohey of a farming family, and after a Tuohey nephew was put in debtor's prison "they [the Brits] took everything in the house except the copper teakettle [down comforter]. The nephew reportedly left for Australia. James, Hannah and infant daughter Mary Bell (no "e"--family name? b 1846) immigrated to Ohio via NYC in 1849 and within 10 years had settled in Newton, Jasper Co, Iowa. A daughter born in the US remembers talk of Tuam and Oranmore on Galway Bay, and of Cork (perhaps debarkatiom port). Daughter Mary taught school until she'd earned enough to bring William's daughter Mary to Iowa, then became the first woman to get a law degree in Iowa. I have not looked for William's death, which may have precipitated bring his daughter to Iowa. She arrived by 1870. I've been stuck there for 30 years. But today I thought I'd hit the jackpot: I found a summary of an ad from the Boston Pilot 8-19-1854, by James Hickey of Carrolton, Ohio, (definitely the right one) looking for his brother-in-law Darby Toohy of Co. Galway, Parish Ballynakill, Townland Rossmore, Barony Ballynahinch, Union Clifden., location after arrival Cincinnati, Ohio. I can't find the townland Rossmore in that locality in Lewis 1837, or Tuoheys (any spelling) in that parish in Griffiths (they may all have flown the coop) and can't find Darby Toohy in any U.S. records. I have not yet checked for tithe records, flaxgrowers lists, .RC records, or completely exhausted U.S and other records with variaations of "Darby," but am I missing something obvious? You can imagine my deflation? Should I try another source for Rossmore? Thanks, Julie
Hello Galway researchers I hoping to find out more about the Taylor and Fahy familes from Castleblakeny in Co Galway. My great-great-grandmother Mary Ann Taylor left Ireland as a famine orphan arriving in Western Australia in 1853. Mary Ann Taylor was the daughter of Martin Taylor and Dorothy Fahy/Fahey. She was born c1835 in Castleblakeney. I haven't been able to find out if she had any siblings, or if so, what happened to them. Family legend has it that she had a (presumably older) sister in Canada. Regards, Elissa Kester Australia

In Dr John Cunningham's excellent book "A Town tormented by the sea "Galway 1790-1914- he mentions 2 McArdles in Galway- James Smith McArdle - a chemist, born in Co Monaghan who was one of the principles of the Iodine factory in Long Walk in Galway Town in 1850's . In 1851 it was reported that he was conducting experiments to extract Iodine from seaweed- in 1862 he registered a patent.. In 1863 he formed the Irish Iodine & Mineral Salts Company with investors from elsewhere. He was company manager and chemist . However by 1865 a new manager Mr Glassford was in charge . Patrick Mc Ardle has been descibed as a guardian of drunks . For those that know Galway the Eglinton Canal runs thru' the City . This canal was opened in 1852 and linked Lough Corrib with the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately in 1855 a Patrick McArdle informed readers of a local newspaper that this was the 3rd time that he had rescued a particular individual from the Canal. In time barriers were installed along the route.
