    1. Re: [IRL-GALWAY] the name Nancy in records
    2. If Ireland RC churches followed the same practices as US RC (and I believed they did and do), at least part of the baptismal name had to be a saint's name. Most people called by the first part but some by the second to avoid confusion with a close relative, some others by the two parts, especially if the first was Mary because Mary so common, and still others by a nickname. 3. I have two records that say Mary(Ann)--would that mean her Christian name was Mary but they called her Ann-or was her name Mary Ann? I have been trying to figure it out for some time now. Helen

    1. [IRL-GALWAY] John Hosty Birth Date
    2. Hi Diane, I checked with my 'Hosty friend' and he said the birth date for his father, John HOSTY, was May 30, 1904 so the Hosty of Tuam would not seem to be a good match. He also said his father did not have a middle name, so the John Felix Hosty right now doesn't seem to be the John Hosty my friend is looking for. The John Hosty of Castlegar is the best option I have. Let me see if somehow I can find more information on that John Hosty. However, after doing genealogy research for 20 years I know we have to be prepared for 'surprises'. Thanks for the help, Charlie King Diane wrote: The familysearch pilot search says John's birth was registered Jan.-March 1904, and by that time registrations generally occurred within a few weeks of the birth, so he might have been born in late 1903. If you want to order the complete registration from the GRO (groireland.ie), it was vol. 4, p. 421. (The nearest other John Hosty registrations in Galway are 1898 and 1920, so if his birth was registered, and most were, probably yours.) 3. Thank you very much for your reply. No, I can't see any others either. I have William's birth certificate. I know the year of Francis' and of John's birth from their army records. They have three sisters, Elizabeth, Susan and Charlotte born in the 1850s; the first two were born in Fermanagh, but I don't know Charlotte's place of birth. I should have thought to mention that they are Church of England / Ireland. I know it is a very unusual surname for Galway. Their parents married in Clogher, Co. Tyrone, and are buried in Athenry. Many Irish place names are incorrectly recorded mainly because the person did not actually understand what the person said because of the dialect or accent. 1. [IRL-GALWAY] John Hosty in Tuam
    2. Hi Diane, Question: Does family search indicated what month that John Felix HOSTY was born? I think my 'buddie' said his father, John Hosty was born in November 1904. I'd have to ask him again. My search of familysearch.org turned up nothing on a 'John Hosty' born 1904. Thanks for the help, Charlie King Diane wrote: The civil birth index on familysearch.org shows John Felix Hosty's birth registered in 1904 in Tuam district.
