The name Brigid from brigh meaning "power, vigour, virtue" epitomizes the Irish genius for layering old and new. The main female deity of the Celts, Brigid made the land fruitful and animals multiply, she blessed poets and blacksmiths. Her namesake St. Brigid of Kildare carried her powers into the Christian era. The stories of Brigid"s compassion and miracles are told now as they have been for more than 1500 years in every part of Ireland. She is equal in esteem and shares a grave with St. Patrick and St. Columcille. Her feast day, February 1st, is the first day of Spring in the Celtic calend On Apr 9, 2010, at 10:08 AM, Karin A. I have an ancestor born Bridget in County Cavan 1840's who went by Delia.
I think Delia is a fairly commonly accepted alternative form of Bridget/Brigid and its variants in Ireland. Bedelia is a form of Bridget, and Delia is the diminutive. Vital records registered in a Catholic church may well be entered in the Latin: Brigidham See: http://www.baby-names-meanings.net/meaning/bridget.html Brigid (not known as Delia!) Bridget and Delia are all over Ireland as the same name. It is unusual to be listed as Delia at birth, but it could happen. Ireland are great for nicknames and many people don't know people's "right" names until they die. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John & Anne Carey" <careys@quickclic.net> To: <irl-galway@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 09, 2010 8:22 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-GALWAY] the name Nancy in records > Can you tell me whether you know if this use of Bridget and Delia is > common > outside of Galway? Apparently from anything I have read - Bedelia is a form of Bridget and most Bridgets prefer the name Delia. It is a Celtic name (Bedelia). However, I suspect that if you like the name Delia - the christain name for baptism would be Bridget as a child was not christened Delia. Just being aware of variants helps in the searches. In my family there were several Bridgets who came to America, beginning in the 1890s, and went by Delia. Somewhere I read they thought Bridget sounded too old-fashioned. Don't know when the nickname first became popular. Diane
Can you tell me whether you know if this use of Bridget and Delia is common outside of Galway? I have been puzzled about the two names since I found out that there were Delia's in my wife's family, including her aunt, whose births were registered as Bridget. I was thinking it was some particularity of the Fannon family or perhaps that area of northeast Galway until I saw your message. Interestingly, there were also some children in the family whose births were registered as Delia. I wonder if they called themselves Bridget? -----Original Message----- From: irl-galway-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-galway-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Karin A. "Fursey" is also a person's first name. Possible that Tim Furse may refer to Tim Unknown son of Fursey Unknown where you could substitute any surname for "Unknown". Quite a usual occurrence when there were two individuals with the same name.
