    1. [IRL-GALWAY] Allan Richard Mitchell 1825 -1910 - (m) Jane D'Arcy 1839 - 1908
    2. Peter & Sandy Mitchell
    3. Allen Richard Mitchell was born in 1825 to William Mitchell a farmer. His mothers first name was likely Mary. According to his death certificate he was born in Monaghan. Allen was not the first child and moved around quite a bit. His marraige certificate (most likely his second marrage) was June 1 1860 in Tuam, Galway to Jane D'Arcy. >From Tuam he moved to Derrigimlagh near Daly Hill, several miles south of Ballyconneely, Galway. The family lived in a Protestant Mission settlement from 1875 to some time near 1900. The date is misleading in church records becasue he moved to Canada sometime around 1882 and may have travelled back and forth or sent for family members over this period of time. He and two sons where sponserered by the McCormick family in York Region north of Toronto where they worked as farmers and labourers. The oldest son Tom went to Australia. I have lots of details about Allen and his decendents but my brick wall is his mother, siblings and father. I recently found a LDS family tree that showed details of Tom and his family tree. They seem unaware of the Canadian branch of the family. Tom married Isabella Goodsell in NSW. They had seven children and the current family may still live near Mareeba Queensland. The last person I have information on there is Donald Elmer George Mitchell who died in 1991. ( Ihave already left my contact information in his cemetary file). If these names mean anything to you or you can suggest ways to find connections to Donald's family please let me know. I have lots of info to provide and am hoping maybe somebody there can help me with my brick wall. Peter Mitchell

    3. Cathy, I hope you have a solution to the issue by now.  I too had a problem logging onto the site once , but got great customer service.  I've had good luck generally with finding information, but I do find that the downloads are frequently very slow and the search engine is inconsistent.  As an experiment, I searched for an exact phrase that appeared in an article I'd already found. But then that  particular article  did not appear in the search res ults!   My advice is to use different combinations and variations in your search and be patient.  It's a good deal, for the money.  Good luck. Kate

    3. Is anyone familiar with the site Irish Newspaper Archives? I purchased a 24 hour access yesterday which worked wonderfully for the first two hours and the next time I logged in (successful log-in), the articles wouldn't display. I even tried logging out and doing the search for non-subscribers which was not successful. I have sent two messages yesterday to the webmaster, but have heard nothing... The 24 hour subscription is ticking away. Thanks! Cathy

    3. I have just added the tithe applotments for Oranmore Civil Parish. Please read my transcription notes. The original tithe applotments were in fairly clear but the organization of the written tithes was a mish-mash. The enumerator did not have any coordination of his notes. He wrote names and townlands in no order and in times, over one another. Therefore, I don't have much confidence on the areas the names are in. I only transcribed names that I could read but at times it was very hard to tell the townland. So, if you find a name of interest, please look at the film and see if you can find the correct townland. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento, CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. Re: [IRL-GALWAY] Carroll /Grady
    2. Townlands are the smallest geographical divisions. Some townlands include towns, but Cloon is just a townland, a rural area. (There is a town of Kilbeacanty just southeast of the larger town of Gort.) There can be 5 to 30 townlands within a civil parish. RC parishes may have the same boundaries as civil parishes, but are often larger. Before the beginning of civil registration in 1864, your best source for records are RC records. The National Library in Dublin has copies of most, and the LDS have filmed many. County heritage centers also have filmed RC records. Others can tell you more than I about possible routes, but if they came from the West, I suspect they travelled by land to Cork or the east coast, then caught a boat to England. The very best things you can do now are to buy a book like Grenham's Tracing Your Irish Ancestors and familiarize yourself with the National Library and Irish Times Web sites. Diane

    1. Re: [IRL-GALWAY] Carroll Gready/Grady
    2. The National Library in Dublin has filmed records for most RC parishes, though you have to go there yourself or hire a researcher. The county heritage centers also have most of the records. The parishes themselves are a last resort, as they're generally understaffed and don't have the time to search the old records unless you have a specific date. You might also check the Irish Family History Foundation site. Free to search, though you have to pay for transcriptions. Diane

    3. With thanks to Diane I have been trawling the various parishes along the Galway/ Clare border. I went to the 1855 Griffiths valuation records of Galway with the idea of seeing what the main surnames were in each parish. Since my John CARROLL left Ireland late in 1855 I figured a match of the CARROLL /GRADY name in the same parish might indicate possible places for further research. The one thing I did notice was that there were no GREADYS which makes me think "Gready" may have been a corruption of GRADY caused by the Irish accent being misunderstood  in Australia. So I proceeded to look for Carroll / Gradys in the same place. So far I have found a couple of hits. One is Gortnadeeve West in Ballynakill and the other Cloon in Kilbecanty. My next question is about Parishes, Townlands and Towns. How do these relate to each other and which is the main place to search. How do the church lands and secular lands fit together on a map? Can I imagine Cloon is a town? Is it still there? I know I appear to be rambling but I am trying to work through the process. I am finding much more on the net than I thought there was. A visit to Ireland is in the wind and I would love to find where these two came from.  I have been to Ireland before and not known anything about them then so I left it as a lost cause!!! Another question. If the boat is listed as leaving Plymouth where would the CARROLLS have got on a boat to get there? What would have been their exit port from Ireland? Where there seperate boats which would have been contracted to the South Australian Company or South Australian Colonisation Committee to bring Free settlers like the CARROLLS out here. Perhaps somewhere in Ireland there is a list of such vessels. (Sth Aust was not settled by convicts - pity for historians here as those records are very detailed!!) Much thanks Anne Adelaide South Australia

    3. Thank you Diane for the information. Although only a few parishes have the dates of Births and Marriages I am looking for it's a start - LDS records (which I can access here in Sth Aus) are a possibility for the ones I have. Can you tell me what the set up is in Ireland please. Do the individual parishes have the records or are they at a central place like the Dublin Archives or even a central Catholic Church Archive. Some of those parishes you gave me the map for mentioned one or the other or nothing so I am assuming there is not a central repository for all of Ireland. Thanks Anne

    3. Thank you for the advice Dianne. I have tried a search on the net and done much research on Co Clare and have all their border parishes but have had no luck in finding the names of the Galway ones. I can find many Galway parishes but I do not know where they are in the county. I see Galway is divided into East and West Geneological Societies. What are the particular areas for each? Thanks Anne
