    3. Rootsweb have had a server problem. See http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/. That's the place to go and look next time you are wondering why you are not getting mails. You might like to bookmark it. Have a good day ! Pádraig (the Paddy that was) System firewalled with ZoneAlarm Pro and regularly caulked with Microsoft Critical Updates. System and outgoing e-mails scanned with automatically-updated Norton Antivirus 2002. And a hearty thank-you to those who take similar precautions and thereby prevent their address books from being hijacked and used to send me spam, viruses, worms, scumware and other undesirable stuff. -----Original Message----- From: IRL-GALWAY-L-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:IRL-GALWAY-L-request@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Tonrey Sent: 16 November 2004 05:19 To: IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Galway]-testing...I'm not receiving my emails from here Me as well. 1. Greetings from New Subscriber
    2. Carolyn Whitfield
    3. Hello! I have just subscribed to this list, and thought I would introduce myself, my name is Carolyn and I live in Davis, California USA. I have been researching my genealogy for a short time in earnest and have a branch through my maternal Grandmother to David O'Killia of Gallagh Co. Ireland born abt 1645. My notes also indicate he was the son of a McTeige O'Killia (perhaps John McTeige O'Killia). My Mom had told me this line was English because Grama's was spelled 'Kelley' and I was pleased to find this was incorrect. I've always felt I had Irish blood ;) So, I'm wondering if anyone has information about these folks. I am also interested in local histories and would appreciate guidance. Cheers from California! Carolyn

I am looking for the families of Bridget WHELAN (b. about 1817) and Redmond BURKE (b. about 1810). He came from Galway City; she was from County Galway but I'm not sure which city. His parents were John and Catherine BURKE; hers were Nathaniel and Bridget WHELAN. They were married by the time they left Ireland (in 1841) for Sydney, Australia, as assisted immigrants; her parents were still alive at the time, but his don't appear to have been. According to the manifest, he was a shepherd. They had one daughter, Mary (my great-great grandmother), born March 16, 1844, in Sydney. Redmond died in Sydney in February 1845; Bridget remarried in August of that year (to James SULLIVAN, who I think was from County Cork). They emigrated to San Francisco, California, arriving in January 1850. They had five daughters and a son: Bridget (Delia), Ellen, Margaret (Maggie), Katie, James and Francisco (a daughter, and yes, that name is correct). The first two were born in Sydney; the rest in San Francisco. James died around 1860. Bridget died, I believe, in 1891, having never remarried. The family was supported even before James' death by three of the oldest four daughters and the son dancing on the stage; Maggie later became a successful actress under the stage name Maggie MOORE. One of Bridget's siblings may have emigrated as well, settling in Virginia City, Nevada. I came across a reference to an unnamed aunt of the children becoming ill during the 1860s and Bridget taking some of the children with her to Virginia City to nurse her. Mary and Ellen both married men from Virginia City and lived out their lives there. Any information about them would be helpful. Joann

    3. Jane, I have looked at these Ordinance Survey maps at the web site you gave and they are indeed wonderful. One question.....I could not tell if the maps for a townland indicated structures or were merely topographical. I could "tell" on the maps for large towns/cities that structures/houses were indicated. Do the maps of the very rural townlands indicate where structures/homes were? Take care Marcie > Before I write another word - you have to buy these maps if you want them, > it's not a free map site - though looking doesn't cost anything > > The maps are the original 6" Ordnance Survey maps of Ireland, which were > drawn up 1829-1843 - the maps have been scanned in full colour and at high > resolution and they were originally drawn up to accompany the Griffiths > Valuation. > > These maps show evertything as it was then - there are often huge > differences between the Ordnance Survey maps that I would look at today and > these old maps - before this company came along, I had access to both kinds, > so I know how much the landscape can differ between a map produced by the > Ordnance Survey Office of a place as it is today or was at the last revision > and the original maps. > > This company has put the separate maps together, so that if your ancestors > came from a place that straddled more than one of the maps, they can produce > an image that takes in the whole area that you want. 3. THE CONNAUGHT JOURNAL Galway, Thursday, July 19, 1824 UNIVERSITY INTELLIGENCE Trinity College, July 13, 1824 The undermentioned Gentleman received their Degrees:- James Martin, Esq., of Ross- Andrew James Veitch, and Henry Baldwin, Esqrs. of Galway. PORT NEWS - The Lovely Nelly, that sailed from this port for Bristol, with oats, was lost on the 1st instant, near Biddiford. It is also reported that the Blossom, a constant trader of this port, which was loaded here with wheat for Sligo, went ashore in Sligo bay. Our port at present is rather bare of shipping; but we understand there are daily expected two vessels from Memel, two from Quebec, one from Stockholm, one from Ontario, one from Darm, besides a number from Liverpool, Glasgow, &c, &c. Part of the Estate of Giles Eyre, Esq. in the County of Galway, was, on Friday sold, under a decree of the Court of Chancery, for 29,000l. - Simpson Harker, Esq. of Riverstown, in the Co. Tipperary, is the purchaser. TO BE LET FOR AN HOTEL FOR THE SEASON, MUNNA LODGE, joining the Race-Course of Burren. Every encouragement will be given to any person taking if for this purpose. There is an excellent BALL ROOM & STABLING for Twelve Horses attached. This Watering place, which is at all times respectfully attended, will be particularly so this Season, as some of the first Families in the Counties of Clare and Galway have engaged Lodges, and every source of Amusement will be promoted. Applications to Mr. Patt Reilly, Burren. July 19, 1824. DOCTOR O'MALEY From motives of justice, we deem it imperative on us to comment, in some degree, on the pretensions of our Townsman, Doctor O'Maley, as set forth in his advertisement. From the general acknowledgement of his efficiency by the poorer class, as also from the decided impression on the minds of many highly respectable persons who have experienced his assistance, we can soar above the limits of refutation in asserting, that no Medical Man in the sphere of our Community has evinced more general professional acquirement or talent. The favourable result of many dubious Medical and Surgical Cases under his care within the last fifteen months, being well attested, cannot fail in acquiring him the character of a judicious practitioner; and we therefore cannot conclude without mentioning from the most unquestionable authority, that in the accoucheur province none of his contemporaries will be found superior; and, under the auspices of that celebrated College from which erudition has so long emanated, we positively assert that no man can have a greater prospect of extensive practice in this very essential professional department. EXCISE SALE TO BE SOLD BY INCH OF CANDLE, at the Excise Office, Galway, on Wednesday, the 21st instant, at the Hour of Twelve o'Clock, for breaches of the Excise Law, FOURTEEN CASKS, containing 464 GALLONS OF JAMAICA RUM. Terms will be declared at Sale, by GEORGE CUPPAIDGE, Collector. July 19, 1824. Cathy Joynt Labath Ireland Old News http://www.IrelandOldNews.com/

    1. New Map Site (Original Ordnance Survey maps)
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Before I write another word - you have to buy these maps if you want them, it's not a free map site - though looking doesn't cost anything The maps are the original 6" Ordnance Survey maps of Ireland, which were drawn up 1829-1843 - the maps have been scanned in full colour and at high resolution and they were originally drawn up to accompany the Griffiths Valuation. These maps show evertything as it was then - there are often huge differences between the Ordnance Survey maps that I would look at today and these old maps - before this company came along, I had access to both kinds, so I know how much the landscape can differ between a map produced by the Ordnance Survey Office of a place as it is today or was at the last revision and the original maps. This company has put the separate maps together, so that if your ancestors came from a place that straddled more than one of the maps, they can produce an image that takes in the whole area that you want. You can personalise these maps by indicating what you would like to have written on the bottom of the map e.g. "The home place of Mary O'Brien" You can take a look at what the Past Homes site has to offer the URL is http://www.pasthomes.com/index.php?aid=83 Currently, they are offering their maps at a special rate - plus, for the month of November sales and shipping is free.
