    1. RE: [GALWAY] After Christmas..............
    2. Rick Haverty
    3. Jane, I recently joined the list, not because I just got a computer, but because the holidays provide some time off from work. That said I wrote the following for a number of relatively new computer / internet users after one of them got burned by an email scam. Maybe this will be useful... Cheers, Rick Haverty (of the Athenry Haverty / Kelly families). This week's Rotary information is a sort of self-help guide for Rotarians - at least those who use computers. The online resources available to Rotarians are a great help in speeding communication and providing reference material. This past week all Pittsford members should have received a logon and password to view the "club business" section of our website (thanks to Bruce Spector). This part of the web site is meant for members only and includes things like minutes from club board meetings, a copy of our by-laws, and other similar documentation. We also heard from Russ Crook last week about a costly lesson he learned while doing things on-line. Here are a few tips to help keep your on-line experience safer: . Never open email from people you don't know - delete it. . Never open attachments that come in email - even from people you know - unless you're certain they do not contain a virus. It's always safer to delete them. . When sending email always put a useful description in the SUBJECT line. Things like "Hello", "Hey there", and blank subject lines are a good tip it's a fake. If you get email with a subject like that, delete it. If you send one with a subject like that, expect it will be deleted unread. . Always run an anti-virus program with up to date data files. I like www.mcafee.com . . Never answer unsolicited email offers - especially those that ask you for any personal information such as account numbers, passwords, and so on. They are trying to rob you. . Never go to a web site that was referred to in an email unless you trust that site completely. Web sites can add nasty little things to your computer without you knowing it - especially if you run Internet Explorer. Use your better judgment. . Remember what your Mother taught you - if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! A common scam is software for cheap. A view of the headers from such offers often reveals the message originated in a place like Russia. They are trying to rob you. . Keep your software (especially if it's Microsoft) up to date. Using the automatic download notifications is a good idea. Are you bothered by too much SPAM (junk mail) in your inbox? Then try using a SPAM filter. I would recommend one called Spambayes. It learns what you consider SPAM and starts to filter it out. After a week or two of learning from you it becomes pretty self-sufficient. You can download it for free from http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/index.html . This works well with Outlook and is available for other email clients as well. If you do use Outlook it's a good idea NOT to use preview panes. Lastly, keep your computer tuned up. Clean up unwanted files - click START, All Programs, Accessories, System tools, Disk Clean-up for a quick way to get rid of lots of junk. You might want to run Defrag from the same System Tools section afterward. If you use the web frequently it may be useful to download a free program called Ad-Aware Personal from http://www.lavasoft.com/ . After you download it check for updates and then run the program. If you've been on the web it will find some spyware on your PC - I guarantee it. Check the boxes of those you want to remove and it will do so automatically when you click on NEXT. After doing all the clean-up activities you may find your PC runs a little quicker too.

    2. My Missing Lamb is GreatGrandMother: My Mary Keane married Peter McCormack c1840's. They lived in East Galway on the banks of the River Suck. Their many children crossed the bridge over the River Suck to attend school in the Ballyforan, Roscommon area. Their sacremtal records are in the Dysart RC dioocese of Roscommon. No information on her parentage. I suspect she was from Roscommon. Any information re Mary's family, their marriage records [her parish I would guess], school records, 1840s church records...would be gratefully received. Janice Marie

    1. Christmas.... and the New Year
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. It's Christmas morning here in Ireland - almost 2am - those of you who live in Guam, Australia and New Zealand - and who celebrate Christmas Day - well, I hope you've had a lovely, peaceful Christmas. For those of you who will celebrate Christmas in the next 24 hours.............I hope that you also will have a peaceful and happy day. I'll be leaving Dublin tomorrow morning and don't know if I'll be back before the New Year. I may be back on New Years Eve If I amn't - then, I wish every single one of you all the best for 2005................ Health and genealogy wise - and every other wise. Goodnight Jane

    1. Re: Memorials to the Dead
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Dear Eric, The records for county Galway that are available on a cd from Eneclann have nothing to do with the 'Journal of the Memorials to the Dead' - the Galway and partial Mayo transcriptions that have been published on cd were transcribed by Mr. Ian Cantwell, son of Mr. Brian Cantwell (RIP) I'm not familiar with Ian's work - unless he is the person who transcribed parts of County Clare - some of our libraries do have a copy of this. His father, Mr. Brian Cantwell transcribed graveyards in counties Wexford and Wicklow - he also worked on some Dublin graveyards. Brian read stones that were dated pre 1880 and he also read any stones in what seemed to be family plots that post dated 1880. As far as I know, he read only those stones that were legible when he visited any graveyard. He was a very thorough man as regards graveyards he visited and he checked the Journal of the Memorials of the Dead in order to compare his readings with those that had been transcribed in the past. For any graveyard that had been transcribed, Brian listed differences or gave the information on stones that he had not read but somebody else had in the past. Brian transcribed hundreds of graveyards - there are about 10 or eleven volumes of gravestone transcriptions for counties Wexford and Wicklow - these works took him at least ten years to bring to publication. For all of those graveyards, I could count the number of times he has notes of differences between his work and any that he found in the Journal of the Memorials to the Dead on ten fingers. Over the last twenty to thirty years, advisory notes to those who would transcribe gravestones have been published in the 'Irish Genealogist' - any advise given was always to have a cut off date of 1880. Cork - take a look at the publications of Henchion in the Journal of the Cork Archaeological and historical Society - wonderful. Mr. Henchion sought out living people in the localities he transcribed graveyards in and also researched re families in literature - he gives a synopsis for the genealogy of families who he had more to add on at the end of each of his transcriptions. All people that I know of who have transcribed any graveyard in the last 50 years, compare their notes to those published in the Journal of the Memorials to the Dead. Many of these are published in journals Irish Ancestor, the Irish Genealogist, Clogher Record - these two journals have the publications for many counties - or the journal of the Irish Family History Society (Kildare particularly in this journal). On the shelves in the NAI lie publications on Dublin, alongside Brian Cantwells Wicklow and Wexford works. What is today known as the Genealogical Society of Ireland and had once a different name has published on some of Dublins bigger graveyards. For Carlow, the Irish Country Women's Association published a number of volumes of transcriptions a few years ago. Clare and Limerick are two counties that also spring to mind as regards volunteer bodies who have transcribed graveyards in their locality. Journal of the Waterford Archaeological & Historical Society, JKilkennyAHS, JGalwayAHS, Louth JAHS - For county Down - you have all the volumes published of transcribed graveayards there - published probbaly in the last ten years - maybe five - compiled by R.S.J.Clarke and published by the Ulster historical Foundation. Volume 1 includes graveyards around Belfast City. If I had time, then I could check all my records/files and probably name a lot more people, places and counties that work has been done in - for the moment, all I can ask is that if I have forgotten any/many - please forgive me You have never seen a copy of the Journal of the Memorials to the Dead - the notes written by the people who were dedicated enough to go to graveayards around the country along with whatever they transcribed in whichever graveyard they visited. All stones were not transcribed. According to those who have visited the same graveyards since, readings were at times inaccurate. Many many graveyards in Ireland have been transcribed by dedicated people - and more have been transcribed by dedicated people in the last 50 years than ever before. It would be great to see the works of those who did transcribe graveyards pre 1915 published, it would be great to recognise the work that they did do. They transcribed counties in spots - as best they could, given the time they had. They did not transcribe every single stone standing or laying flat. Publications in the Irish Ancestor can be accessed by purchasing the Irish Ancestor cd from Eneclann............publications in the Clogher Record can possibly be accessed by becoming a member of the Society - same for the Irish Genealogist. Armagh - you have Seanchas Ardmhaca - sorry, I may have forgotten to mention that there are gravestone publications in that journal - then there is whatever is to be founf in the other journals that have societies which publish them. Eneclann could publish the information that is contained in the actual 'Journal of the Memorials to the Dead' - but not these others. Every person can access any publication in any journal simply through inter-library request - or, in some instances, the transcriptions have been published on the internet - especially on rootsweb genealogy lists. As far as I know, the Latter Day Saints Library has copies of Brian Cantwells 'Memorials to the Dead' for Wicklow and Wexford - they also have copies of the ''Journal to the Memorials for the Dead" and any person who wants to, who lives outside Ireland can access these by going to their local Family History Library and ordering copies of these films from the LDS. There are no transcriptions for everywhere in any county Eric..................else why would all the people who ahve transcribed graveyards in the past 50 years have bothered. Brian Cantwell did not spend 10-15 years of his life transcribing Wexford and Wicklow if someone had done it before him To any person who would want to encourage Eneclann to publish documented gravestone material - I would ask you to please check if there is a society associated with the county of your interest - be it titled Archaeologial & Historical - be it Genealogical - Family...........whatever. Please check with them as to what is available for your county. Then, write to Eneclann. 1. Tithe information: Re: [GALWAY] tithes
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Pat, First of all the Galway Tithe listings are not on any cd.............. the LDS do have films of the Tithe information - the same as we have here in Ireland. The next thing is that there is not a Tithe listing for every parish in any county and then for some parishes there are more than one set of Tithe listings - whether there is one for Boyounagh or not - well - maybe someone on this list can say. The last - well, the thing is that in my experience (looking and and transcribing tithes for different parishes in different counties) - my guess would be that given what we are told the population of any parish is for 1837 - which is in the same 20 time year frame as the Tithe Applotment Books exist for - then I'd say that if we get 10% of the names of the people who lived in that parish (in any county) we're lucky. You're Luke Thomas Comer may have been a sub-lessee in that parish - in which case his name will not appear on the Tithel listings. He may have been a 'partner' to soemone else and that someone else's name will be given - and then again, with an unusual name like Luke - you'd be pretty sure that a person called Luke Comer was your Luke Comer should that name appear on the TAB's. The final answer re your question is that there is no cd for Galway Tithes and you won't know if your Luke is listed unless you check out the parish yourself - if there is an extant copy of the tithes for that parish................and even if you don't find his name - that doesn't mean he wasn't one of those silent partners Sorry that the answer is not more positive. As to information contained on Tithe APplotment Books - that varies - soemttimes, all you find is the name of the townlands and the total evaluation of them - soemtimes, you find the evaluation of all the different kinds of land that someone held and explanations as to the quailty of the land - and sometimes you find the names of the 'major landholder - that is who the other people named were leasing teh land from - or the incumbent - the 'impropriator- and information noted as per maps that the major landholers have sumbitted re their properties that other people were leasing the land on. The information in the tithes is a real mish mash Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "phil" <patvon@gtw.net> To: <IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 20, 2004 3:48 PM Subject: [GALWAY] tithes > What kind of information do the tithes have? > Would my Luke Thomas Comer of Stonetown, which is in the civil parish of > Boyounagh possibly be on that CD? > pat in st. louis

May you have a good one on a personal basis - and may you find loads of branches for those trees of yours. The tithes that I was referring to, are on an LDS Family History Library film, not a cd. The tithes vary in what info they give but mostly give info much like the Griffith's Valuation...name of occupier (head of household only) and then some description of the property that the occupier lives on and the townland where it is located. If your Luke Comer lived in Stonetown in 1834 and was the head of his household, he should be listed. ===== Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com All outgoing email is virus free, scanned by Norton

    1. RE: [GALWAY] Re: Latter Day Saints Vital records index
    2. Patrick Casey
    3. Theresa, On the assumption that this precise date and place of birth are correct, and because it is after 1864 (when registration of BDM started), and on the assumption that the birth was registered (some were not), you have all you need to contact the Galway registrar of BDM for a copy of the birth register entry or birth certificate. That's Supt. Registrar of B.D.M. Western Health Board 25 Newcastle Road Galway City, Co. Galway Ireland and you might want to call them beforehand at +00353 (91) 523122 (that's the WHB switchboard) to check that they have the register for the 4th quarter of 1868. I don't want to speak for them but - because you have such an exact date and place - if there is a bit of a lull at the office they might even take a quick look in the register while you wait on the phone and tell you whether they have the entry you need and, if so, how much money to send for the copy. Re. sending the money: the copy of a certificate is €6.95 and that of a register entry ca. €3. What I do is simply put a €5 or €10 (or whatever) note in an envelope and ask them to put the change in the charity box in their office. It's much simpler than sending a money order and everyone's happy with the arrangement. Pádraig (the Paddy that was) P.S. This suggestion only applies to this kind of situation where one has a precise date and place. The records are not yet computerised so requests for "the date of death of my g-g-grandfather who died somewhere in Galway after 1864" are likely to get short shrift. To quote the GRO re. genealogical searches (and I assume the same applies to the Supt.Registrar's office, "the office does not have the staffing levels or resources to engage in this type of activity. We are solely concerned with the administration of the civil registration system in Ireland." Just thought I'd add that caveat FWIW. P(tPtw). System firewalled with ZoneAlarm Pro, regularly caulked with Microsoft Critical Updates and scanned with AdAware and Spy Sweeper. System and outgoing e-mails scanned with automatically-updated Norton Antivirus 2002. And a hearty thank-you to those who take similar precautions and thereby prevent their address books from being hijacked and used to send me spam, viruses, worms, scumware and other undesirable stuff. -----Original Message----- From: IRL-GALWAY-L-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:IRL-GALWAY-L-request@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of tesmith40@comcast.net Sent: 17 December 2004 18:54 To: IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GALWAY] Re: Latter Day Saints Vital records index Joan, What dates are covered on this? It is happening with IRL-CLARE ; IRL-GALWAY ; IRL-LIMERICK ; IRL-MONAGHAN ; IRL-LEIX and probably all other rootsweb genealogy lists Please see for an explanation as to why aol is rejecting these emails. http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/554rlyb1.html It is possible that bigpond.com is also rejecting rootsweb emails. Mails to any people with bigpond email addresses are being returned in bulk (though we only have a few bigpond subscribers compared to aol) This message is being posted to the lists for the benefit of any people who use these servers - I know that they won't receive this mail - the post will be in the archives though. 1. Re: [GALWAY] Re: IRL-GALWAY-D Digest V04 #201
    2. Dear Barbara Re: your Kilmartins. I know you must have this info.already. In "Aran Reader", the chapter on Haddon and Browne, the constable collecting the info.about surnames definitely says the name was from Clare, and he was referring to the Kilmartins on Aran specifically. I'm fairly sure Peter Kilmartin ,b.1789,was the first Kilmartin on Aran. His wife Peggy was much older than him,and probably they only had the one child ,Patrick, Bryan's father. There are no other Kilmartins in the Aran records until Bryan starts having kids,so that suggests that he too was an only child,or else his siblings left the island altogether. Peter was a boatman by trade,so presumably he met his wife when he visited the islands. There was a regular trade in peat and livestock from co.Clare to Aran. In the 1821 he doesn't own any land, nor in the 1834 Tithes. It's not till Griffiths 1855 that his son Patrick is shown as a farmer. There are only 26 entries for Kilmartin in Clare, and the bulk of these are clustered in the townlands around Doolin, the ferry port for Aran. This is Killilagh parish. The RC records are Lisdoonvarna parish. They are not early enough to pick up Peter, but maybe some of Bryan's siblings went to the mainland to live. The parish register may well note that they were from the islands,as the Aran register usually makes a note of people from the mainland. Again,I'm pretty sure you must have been down this path already- but just in case.... Have a merry Christmas Cathy
