    1. FW: Tuam Allens
    2. Allen Simon JCP CASE LOAD ADVISER
    3. Having recently started tracing my family history I've found that my great grandparents moved to the Midlands in England in the 2nd half of the 1800's from Tuam in Galway. Being a novice at this kind of thing I'm looking for any help I can find to help trace them I don't even know precisely when they left Tuam and cannot link them directly to the 3 Allen's I have so far found in Tuam. My great Grandparents are Martin Allen and Bridget Allen who according to 1901 census were born in Tuam in 1863/4. I'm having difficulty finding references for them on the earlier census' online and Familysearch.org seems to lead to a different Martin & Bridget Allen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Does anyone know if there is significance (country of origin, perhaps) in the given names Katherine vs. Kathleen. Or in using "C" or "K" for the first letter of those given names? I have always wondered--the Cathleen we passed along in our family has morphed from Kathleen to Cathleen over several generations. Thanks, Patricia in St. Louis

    3. Hello Simon, Is this your family in 1891, living in the Civil parish of Swannington, Ecclesiastical parish of St Andrew, County of Leicestershire? Some indexing has been done, with images linked so that you can view an image of the original microfilm of the census. If this is your family and you do not have a subscription, I can extract the rest of the information and try to find them in the earlier online censuses to which I have access. If your family moved to Ireland between 1881 and 1891, they would not be in the 1881 census and therefore would not be in the index and extraction of that census that appears on the familysearch.org website. 2. You say your grandparents moved to the UK from the Tuam area. Was this as individuals or as a couple? Did they marry in Ireland or UK? Do you know her maiden name? Presumably this marriage was RC? Were any of their children born in Ireland? There were only 30 or so Allen families in Galway in the mid 1800s,and only a handful of those in the general Tuam area,so they shouldn't be too difficult to trace. Have you checked the parish records yet? Cathy

    3. Dear Eric and all, There is no surname index to these as far as I can make out. They were published only in the last few years by the Ulster Historical Foundation and are probably available through Genealogical libraries. They would be covered by copyright. No person that I know of has tried to put an index on line- to do so, they'd have to go through each transcription and create the index first, and even though the transcriptions are arranged alphabetically, indexing the surnames that occur would be a lot of work Try contacting the UHS postal address 66 Balmoral Avenue, Belfast, BT9 6NY Co. Antrim N. Ireland I have checked the copies of Breda, Garryduff Presbyterian and Castlereagh for you and there are no Macklin stones in them. The fact that she was from Gortnamanagh, Kilchreest, Loughrea, County Galway, Ireland, is based on information from another genealogist and I have not yet verified it. I know for a fact that she and Patrick raised their children in Rothcosgrove, Ardrahan, County Galway, Ireland, because she is my husband's grandmother. Charlotte

    3. Jane asked for computer tips for newer users last week. There are plenty of very official looking emails that are seemingly from banks, credit card companies and (very often) PayPal. These are all scams - none of these companies ask you to do anything online that involves providing account numbers, passwords and the like. Don't fall for these scams - they will steal your information and your money. Here's an example of one I got tonight (I normally delete these without opening them , but thought I'd pass the information along to others). 3. Good question Jim! Well, when I discovered my gt gt grandmother's name was Maria Clarke "of Limerick Ireland" I naively thought the "e" had been added on by mistake to what seemed to be an English name. Then, a friend with an interest in Irish surnames and their variations, suggested that the "e" may have been added to indicate that these Clarkes were RC, a practice that I'm told was not unusual in Ireland in the 1800-1900s. Then someone subsequently wrote me from Australia that Maria Clarke's grave is in the RC portion of the local country graveyard, the only member of the Saisells not buried in a protestant section. Maybe I should have said "probably" rather than "possibly" R.C. There is no hard and fast information, only supposition from the scant knowledge we have of this lady. There is no information about her birth date, place, parents, siblings, how and when she arrived in Australia. There was one Maria Clarke that we know of. She came from Portumna, Co. Galway, was protestant and could read and write. But my fellow Saisell/Clarke researchers seem to have discounted here because she was very young when she arrived in Australia, and probably in the wrong decade. Thanks for enquiring, Jim. I don't suppose you have a Maria Clarke tucked away in your family tree??? Happy New Year. 2. John Egan
    3. Here's another Noonan for you collection: Frederick Joseph Noonan, born Chicago April 4, 1893, navigator of Amelia Earhart's plane which vanished in the 1930s. He was the son of Joseph T Noonan who married Catherine Helena Alice Egan, b 23 January, 1893, in Plaistow, West Ham, London, England. By 1910, and possibly earlier, Fred had established himself as a sailor. Over the next twenty years, he steadily built his knowledge, experience and credentials until, by 1930, he was Captain Fred Noonan, sailing out of New Orleans for the Mississippi Shipping Company and holder of a Master's license for steamships of any gross tonnage for any ocean. Fred was an expert navigator and that ultimately took him from the sea and into the air for Pan American Airways in about 1930. His mopther's parents were Richard James Egan (perhaps born in Mayo) and Elizabeth (nee Green) who most probably married in Kensington, London, in 1861. I would like to know more about Richard's forbears John Egan, London

    1. Re: NOLAN from Barony of Clare near Tuam, Galway
    2. Dear all, May I wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! I am attempting to trace the birthplace in Ireland of my great grandfather, Christopher NOLAN. According to the UK 1881 census he was born in Ireland (no place mentioned) circa 1839. He married Deborah KELLY, born Ireland 1840 (no place mentioned) at St. Aloysious RC. Church, Ardwick, Manchester, UK. on 26 March 1864. Family legend had it that he came from Clare in Ireland, but neither we nor the County Clare Heritage Centre can find any trace of him in that County. However, a couple of newspaper clippings recently found in family papers - not dated and, therefore, unattributable, record a family of Nolans in the Barony of Clare, Co. Galway. They refer to Ballinderry in the parish of Corofin south of Tuam. Further research upon this family of Nolans has put paid to them having a direct relationship with me, BUT: apparently in a small graveyard near to where Ballinderry House was are several graves of numerous Nolans who, obviously, belonged to sub-clans of the Nolans of Ballinderry.Time limitations made a visit to this cemetery impossible. Research into other, nearby graveyards revealed several Nolan families I would dearly love to discover which of these Nolans can be linked to my family. Is anyone researching these Nolan families? I can let anyone who is interested have all the details I have uncovered upon the Ballinderry Nolans. Has anybody any links to Nolans who emigrated to Manchester, Lancashire, England? If so I would dearly love to make contact Many thanks for your interest in this e-mail. Regards Chris Morley, Sheffield, England. Researching: MORLEY from Mayo, VICKERS from Manchester, UK., RAWSON from Manchester, UK.

    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Dear Patricia, Like my subject line says - I honest to God do not have a clue. My Longford/Galway Granny was a Noonan nad I've never researched that line. Intereztingly - and very much so for me in what you say here - a name coincidence.............. When we moved to where my mother now lives, the name of the local Dr. was Comer - it's my father is the Galway connection - my mother would be Donegal/Tyrone and Kerry. Anyway - my mother - she's a doctor, an M.D to some in other continents. When her mother died, totaslly different surname to Lyons - Mrs. Comer the last Dr's wife (in our small town) turned up at the funeral - allthe way from Kerry. She told my Mam, that if she had known she was my Grandmothers daughter, then, they'd have had a lot more to talk about. My Dad - like I say - he's my Galway connection - besides which I speak Galway Irish - that's where I was sent to the Gaeltacht................. The Comers, as I know them - with Laois and Kerry connections it's not the most common of surnames in Ireland. Noonan is probably nort the most common of Galway names either. Your photo, that could prove very interesting to me/us the furture. 1. RE: Kellys and Ruanes
    2. Rick Haverty
    3. Hi Lois, Funny you should ask. I was recently conversing with a woman named Roane who found out that her family name was in fact Ruane (pronounced Ru-wain) and Anglicized (or otherwise screwed up) to Roane once in the US. She had found the name had several variations including Rowan, Roan, and Roane (and I think a few others). So your question is not dumb at all - in fact a very good one to ask. Here's a snippet of the note she sent me: *** A few years back, I wrote to the Galway Family History Center and had them do a search for me. They asserted the spelling of this surname in Ireland is RUANE and they furnished 1821 Ireland Census records of a family in Athenry town with names and ages that are a reasonable fit to my known data. --I am aware (as I suspect you are) that this back-working of data is NOT a legitimate research technique, and my theory may ultimately be proven wrong, but... *** This doesn't mean definitively that your Rowan surname is derived from Ruane, but there is clearly that possibility and you should search with that in mind. It's amazing to look at the US census records and see just how many people were illiterate back in the 1800s and well into the 1900s. It plays havoc with family history research as you seem well aware. The dates are another thing that blow me away. I've found my great grandmother with at least four different birth years (different on census, ships papers, marriage, and birth certificates). Sometimes by as much as 10 years! Were they shy about their real age? Did they care? Or, and I think this is the most likely, they weren't even sure themselves. I've tried to take the document closest to their birth (often a Christening) and use it as the benchmark. It seems like it would be the most likely to be accurate, but then you have the people who record the documents who - are human after all - make mistakes. When I was 18 I registered for the draft and the half-deaf woman who took my information recorded my birth date wrong. To this day my draft card (wherever it is) has an incorrect date. That happened in 1970! As far as "rising above your raising" is concerned, my grandfather always used to say we were from Irish royalty (gramps was a bartender and a blackface in a Vaudeville act and quite a character). After all, the Haverty's were "Chiefs" in Galway. I think Chiefs were seated slightly above serfs, but being Irish we like to crow a little :>) Since then I've found a link to real royalty in the family. Not one he'd likely enjoy though (having held Sinn Fein meetings in my childhood home and all). I found a link to Lady Diana Spencer's 7th grandmother through a family named Gatchell (also spelled Getchell and sometimes with only one "L" - here we go again) who come back into my line via the Doughty and Moriarty families. Now that's almost as distant as Adam and Eve, but heck, it's royalty. So the next time you pronounce your name Row-WAN, hold your head high like a prince or princess. You might just be one. Cheers, Rick Haverty PS: I also have relations from Rhode Island who are Greenes (noticed your email address) and they in turn are related to the Rhodes (of Rhode Island). -----Original Message----- From: GreenHiLo@aol.com [mailto:GreenHiLo@aol.com] Sent: Friday, December 31, 2004 7:06 PM To: rhaverty@rochester.rr.com Subject: Kellys and Ruanes Rick, I just read your recent mail to the Galway list and saw the name Ruane listed. This may seem like a dumb question but how is that name pronounced? I have some ancestors from Galway who appear as Rowan. My mother 's family pronounced the name ROW-WAN (accent second syllable) I attended a Rowan family gathering and pronounced the name ROW-WAN and a gentleman there told me that I was " rising above my raising" to pronounce it that way. That group pronounced the name Row-in. My thought is that my group may have had another spelling for the name which resulted in the different pronunciation. My family was illiterate when they emigrated so they wouldn't have known how to spell their name. I have been told that Ruane is an alternate spelling for Rowan so if you can tell me how your family pronounced Ruane I would be most appreciative. The few ancestors I have found DID pronounce it like mother did. My family lived in the mountains of western Maryland-They kept a very low profile and have been a great challenge to find in records. Thanks for your time, LoisZ

Hello to Patricia, Dr Jane and Rick: Tired of chasing elusive vital records I'm exploring a method recommended, some time back, by Dr Jane who said, words to the effect, Think like an Irishman--gather names of those living in clusters in your townland[these are likely related] and build your family on this approach. Rick--[ in case you don't know] Doughiska is about 3 miles easterly of Galway City--about that far from Athenry. Oh! A tidbit for those searching NOONAN. I grew up in San Francisco in the 1930's. There was a NOONAN family living around the corner from dad's Jewelry Store in the Sunset District. I will check the 1930 census and get back if I find anything.
