I recently loaded my family tree up on GenCircles http://www.gencircles.com . They don't provide any information in the way of census or other documentation, but they do one very interesting feature. They run a (seemingly intelligent) compare program between your GED file and all the others on the site. They call it Smart Matching. Then they give you a report of all the names that seem to match. The information you get is totally unregulated - anyone can post a GED file with good, bad, or just mistaken information. But I still think it's worthwhile just to get connected with people who are searching the same branches you are. The site is free to use. They would like it if you purchased their software (Family Tree Legends) and give you some incentive to do so - like making the matching immediate instead of making you wait 24-72 hours. The software is available at CompUSA for $39.95 and there's a $10.00 rebate coupon right now. I might buy it, but not because you *must* have it to use this web site, just because I played their demo and thought it looked interesting. Has anyone else on this list had experience with GenCircles or with Family Tree Legends? Any feedback positive or negative? Thanks, Rick Haverty
I just got on the phone with Godfrey site and they don't why that happening but are working on it we should be on line soon Phyllis

Hello Judy, Since I am the original lister who asked for the suggestions, I felt I should respond. First, I am VERY sorry you felt offended by this other lister. I went back and re-read his post, and I wanted to indicate to you that yes you are right there are many negatives in the post. Again, I am very very sorry for that. As bad as you may be feeling, I beg you not to let this one post deter you from posting suggestions again. I am writing a book on the life of someone who is not in my bloodline and I sincerely appreciate your lovely and valuable suggestions for my research. I have spent many many many hours online and off conducting research and your suggestions did not go unheard. I joined this list to obtain research information, and thanks to you (and others!) I obtained a good number of sites. I am sure other listmembers are thankful to you as well. Again, please do not let just one negative post keep you from giving to others what they need. And again, I am very sorry he hurt you. I do hope he rectifies it in private. That would be the right thing to do. Take a deep breath, know how highly I regard your post and keep your chin up. I am glad you are here. Dear Judy, I apologize for the delay in thanking you. You have been very kind in replying to my query for additional sources for my research. I thank you very kindly for that. I have plenty of exciting work ahead with the sites you have given me. I shall visit them as time permits. Seems I am spending more time devising emails at the moment than anything else. This weekend I will have more time for actual research. Having dial up doesn't help speed research, lol. Thanks again Judy, for posting these links. And yes, they were very helpful. I was able to visit the newspaper abstracts briefly and found an article I loved. Time will see what the rest has in store. I don't think it was as you took it, there are so many sites out there that for the money does not have what we need stateside. It is a paid subscription and lets face it the records on most of the sites don't do us a bite of good the only way you can find it is to go to the Family History and look at films if you are lucky enough to know where they are from, otherwise you have to go to the Library in Dublin. When I was there I got a lot of good advise and I went to the GRO Office and found nothing but a lot of wasted time and money. If I knew better I would have went just to the Library and look at church records. Next time Phyllis researching Bermingham/Carroll Northern Ireland Carlin/Bradley/Doherty/McLaughlin
I am researching the BURROW(E)S family and would be interested to hear from anyone with information between 1750 and 1850. Any connections with the following, in particular, would be most welcome. 1. Doctor Thomas BURROWS b. abt 1801 Ireland. Married Jane MOTHERWELL and had at least 4 children, Thomas, Alexander, William and Emma - born mid 1830's - 1840. Dr. Thomas BURROWS died 6th August 1883 aged 81 and is buried in Ballysumaghan, Sligo county, Ireland. His wife died 10th December 1875 aged 66. 2. Thomas BURROWES b. 26th July 1801 Dundalk, Louth to Lt. Johnston BURROWES and Mary BURROWES (nee DEVEREUX). 3. Andrew BURROWES b. abt 1813 County Sligo. Convicted of highway robbery and sentenced 1835 to life in NSW Australia. Transported on the ship "Hive" which was shipwrecked and finally arrived Sydney 24th December 1835. I re-read that post... I don't think that's what he meant to do at all. He said he's kind of a novice and doesn't quite know how to get the best info from these sources. He said most of his comments may come from lack of understanding. For the most part he was asking for advice. And he did say, "please be patient" [with him]. He also gushed about the last one. {:-) There may have been an attitude of pessimism but it seems to come from frustration, not from an intent to criticize your suggestions. I hope you will continue to share your experience with us. I found your post very helpful and saved it in my links folder. It will remind me to try some of them again, and it brought new ones to my attention. Thank you! Judy (and all), Thanks for your help and pointers. I have questions (and comments) about a few of the websites for those on the list who may have used them. I'm not much of a genealogist, so many of my comments may come from my lack of understanding of how to use some of these tools. Please be patient. www.familysearch.org (LDS Church website) - I've found some very good info here including the 1880 US census. A lot of the other records seem to be "stand-alone." That is, one relationship only. It seems difficult to string these pieces of information together. Is there a "best way" to use this site? I've also noticed that many of the records are "as submitted" by members of the church and their authenticity or accuracy are not necessarily know. http://www.familyhistory.ie/ (Genealogy Society of Ireland) - I don't fully understand this site. There doesn't seem to be any search capability. There is a subscription available. Does anyone have this subscription? Is it worth your while? http://www.irishorigins.com/ (Irish Origins, http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/ - I've paid for their services myself and haven't found them to be a particularly good value. You really have to know what it is you're signing up for. In my naiveté I purchased some records and ended up with very little useful information. Lots of general information and almost no detail. Still I think I've seem more than one person on this list recommend this site. What am I doing wrong? (Ireland.com, http://www.famineshiprecords.com/ (Irish Emigration Project) - This one sounded great, but the web site is down (they say for security reasons) as of December 2004. It says to check back in a couple of weeks. They are also a pay-for site (free initial search, then some cost for details). Has anyone used them? Are they worth the money? http://www.nli.ie/fr_servfamily.htm (The National Library of Ireland) - I'm a little overwhelmed by this one. Without spending too much time with it, I would guess there is nothing you can search on-line. It would appear to be a great resource for preparing for a physical trip to the National Library. Did I get this about right? http://www.irelandoldnews.com/ (Ireland Newspaper Abstracts) - I love this site. A ton of fine articles on-line with a good search engine. Even if they haven't helped with my family history, they are fun to read. Thanks, Rick Haverty

I have a photocopy of the New Zealand marriage register entry of a John Robert LAMBERT, 45, and Jane TINGEY, the date of the marriage being 24 October 1889. John's birthplace is given as Galway, Ireland, his parents being named as William H. LAMBERT, Gentleman, (middle name unclear; looks like Hasmeton) and Theresa Elizabeth LAMBERT, nee TAYLOR. I'm researching the families of LAMBERT of Castle Lambert and of Castle Ellen, both in County Galway, Ireland, so am very keen to know more about the above William and Theresa.
