HI ALL, OTHERDAYS IS DOWN AND WON'T BE ON THE LINE UP TILL IT'S WORKING AGAIN. NO ONE CAN GET TO IT RIGHT NOW. GODFREY HAS IT HIDDEN DUE TO THE PROBLEM, IT WILL BE ON THE LIST WHEN IT'S FIXED, PER THE GODFREY LIBRARY. I REC'D AN EMAIL FROM TOM KEMP THE MANAGER OF GODFREY. LORRAINE
Thank you to everyone who posted information about Glennamaddy and Comers. It is very helpful to me and I appreciate it so much. Anybody know if the Stonetown and Williamsburg still exist? Patricia in St. Louis
Thanks for the info. I have been very fortunate with the LDS records...many 'bingos'. Just trying to fill some gaps...especially re Gr.Grandmother, Mary Keane. Thought a death cert. would give a clue to her birthplace via parents names. Marriage records for c1840s unfound. If I knew her parish.......she may have come from Roscommon which is right across the River Suck. But thank you for your time and response. I'll be in Dublin next week and then on to Galway City. Any more luck I have will be like a shower of blessings from above. Are you a new subscriber? I still can't log-in. System doesn't recognise my username. If you are new, then maybe it's OK with new data, but the old has been corrupted/wiped during the downtime. As to the value- I think that depends on what you are looking for. It's not going to give you Birth, marriage and death records. Or parish records. (At least not yet) So don't expect that sort of specific info (except in certain circumstances) It does have Griffiths. If you know where your family came from, one copy of the correct page, and then you might never need it again. But many people reseaching several different Irish lines ,and who don't know exactly where their families came from, will use it a lot more. And if you just have "Ireland" as a place of origin, then you will need to use it extensively. It has trade directories, lists of clergy, police etc that you might find useful in certain situations. I find the placenemes database (similar to seanruad) useful and the surname database really helpful,as a filter to Griffiths when it comes to spelling. (Griffiths is very exact on spelling- unlike the IGI,which puts similar spellings all together,Griffiths will not put Burke with Bourke, for example,so you often need to put in several variations to make sure you have everyone, and given the spelling variables... With otherdays,if you opt for "similar names" or whatever the option is,you get a very confusing collection of names. You might ,for example, get Burke and Butler, but still not Bourke!) I have never been successful downloading maps- but that's probably me being stupid. I do a lot of research for other people,so I would use it dozens of times a day. If you are unsure, sign up for the 72 hour option. It does take a while to get used to it,so don't expect to get the hang of it straightaway. Cathy
Otherdays is a hell of a lot better value than Irish origins for those who may consider subscribing to the either site. Depends on what you are looking for. Both have the Griffiths................. Me - and my experience is not that of others - but, I've found Otherdays to be the better of the two. I on;y subbed to Irish Origins on one of their short subscriptions.................... I found them to be the worst value for money that I have ever spent in my life - I wrote to them the night I subbed and realised the value I received. That was at least in August 2004 - I have not yet received a reply to my email. I live in Dublin, I can access what is advertised on either of these two sites just by taking a 20 minute LUAS ride from my house - the cost to me, is my LUAS (train fare) nothing more...........regardless of that, from what I have seen of either of these two sites, if you want to sub to one then go for the one that is located in Ireland - Otherdays. Not only are they based in Ireland...............subscribing allows you access to more. The access to more - maybe quality is not the same - but you get more and quality is pretty close Jane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack Keating" <jkeating2@comcast.net> To: <IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2005 1:33 AM Subject: [GALWAY] Value of Otherdays > Does anyone have experience with Otherdays? > Yesterday I got into the site. Galway city library - or county library does not list the parish records or tithes or anything else - but - the parish records are available though the National library in Dublin - the tithe applotment books, Griffiths evaluation are available through the National Archilves in Dublin All three are available through your local Family history centre - you are in Boston Death records from 1864 - they're also available to you through your family history research centre in Boston - or, in Dublin - or, at the Registrar's Office in Galway, if they offer a research facility. Whether or not the local priest allows access - that absolutely depends on how he's been treated in the past, how many require access etc. Many P.P.'s and curates al over the country - they're offering specific times for family history research to parishoners and others these days. Jack I have subscribed for the past two years and once you become accustomed to the site it is user friendly. Kristin Troy NY
Diane, Don't mind the Griffiths for the moment - please, if you don't mind. What exactly is said on the birth registration - you do mean birth registration as per a birth record from Ireland? Most, if not all photocopies from civil registers here will give the following two things Superintendent Registrar's District : XXXXX Registrar's District: XXXXXXXXXX What is on the one you have? Thanks. Does anyone have experience with Otherdays? Yesterday I got into the site. My interest is in Keating in Cork and Finn in Galway and i didn't get a warm feeling that the sitwas going to help.Any reaction? Thanks Jack
Can anyone tell me what records are available in Galway city? And where? I'm interested particularly on death records 1870 to 1910 or so.... and birth, marriage records from 1864 on. Are the sacremental records for RC diocese of Dysart covering East Galway/Roscommon available in the local church in Galway/Roscommon? Thanks....so very much for any and all replies. Janice Boston
I can't log on and wrote to them about it last night. I was thinking it had to be me, that I've used some combination of username and password that I haven't thought of. Sorry to say Cathy, you're not the only one. It's probably a glitch they haven't worked out yet JAne ----- Original Message ----- From: <CathOneill@aol.com> To: <IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 22, 2005 5:15 PM Subject: Re: [GALWAY] Otherdays is back... > Rick > Have you managed to Log- in? > I can't get in with my username and password.
Does anyone know if Killeroran and Killeronan are two spellings for the same civil parish? My grandmother's birth registration lists Killeroran and there is also an LDS entry for the parish, but Griffith's refers to Killeronan. Diane
Hi, Last week I joined Godfrey Library so that I would be able to access Otherdays. I haven't been able to get into the site and e-mailed Godfrey last evening. They said that Otherdays is having problems and no one can access the site until the problems are rectified. Carol MARTIN, LYNCH, GIBBONS, JOYCE
Rick Have you managed to Log- in? I can't get in with my username and password. I've e-mailed them, but no reply as yet. Cathy
Hi Is any one familiar with the book Counting the People: a Survey of Irish Censuses, 1813-1911 by Margaret Crawford? Published by FourCourts, ISBN 185182734. If so, how much detail is given on these censuses? Thanks Pat **** All outgoing mail scanned by Norton Anti-virus ****
Patricia, I had a similar experience with my ancestors who were from Tubber, Ballymoe, County Galway. Ballymoe is very near the County Roscommon border but their mail is sent to Ballymoe, Castlerea, County Roscommon. I've often wondered if back in the early 1800s the border between Co. Roscommon and Co. Galway changed. Would anyone have that answer? Thanks. Joanne

Patricia, My grandmother came from Glenamaddy and I had the opportunity to visit there last October. It is in northeast Galway right on the Roscommon border. There is a website www.Glenamaddy.net which gives a lot of information about the town and it's history. My grandmother, Helen Treacy, was born in 1889 to Thomas Treacy and Bridget Rush. She came to Boston married and had a family. There are Comers and Mannions in Boston that she knew from Glenamaddy, my father always thought they were related but another cousin, who grew up in Glenamaddy, said they were close family friends. This family of Comers and Mannions married somewhere along the line. I believe there are several different Comer families in the Glenamaddy area. I have pictures of two Comer headstones from the cemetery in Glenamaddy. One is In Loving Memory of Patrick Comer, Woodfield Derry, died July 22nd 1985 aged 85 years (erected by his brother William). The 2nd reads Thomas Comer, Woodfield, died Feb. 8th, 1942. Aged 75 years and his wife Catherine died Nov. 20th, 1969 aged 77 years, their son Michael died march 9, 1975. Erected by his loving daugher Mary. My Thomas Treacy was originally from Woodfield and the story goes that the Treacys and Comers lived on the same property. If I remember correctly there were lots of headstones, in Glenamaddy and Boyonough Cemetery, for Comers. Good Luck with your search. It looks like Otherdays.com is back up and working.... Cheers, Rick Haverty
Can anyone tell me in what Catholic parish and 1901 and 1911 census DED the townland of Lisivruggy would have been? I know it was in the Killeroran registrar's district in 1873, when my grandmother was born. Many thanks! Diane Culhane
