    3. Due to an error at the Rochester NY clerks office I have the naturalization records for John Bernard Coyne born in Kidderminister, England on 24 Feb 1885. I've had several emails from people researching Coyne on this list so I thought I'd post this to find out if anyone would like the papers. Bruce Coyne

    3. Thanks to the CLDS, most of the world has access to the Catholic parochial registers of Tuam, 1790-1920. Baptisms and marriages for the 1790-1880 period are found on Microfilm 0926234, also, using high magnification reader, there is another microfilm of the same data, Microfilm 1279208. Your nearest CLDS Family History Center will show visitors how to access those microfilms. They are not always very easy to read, but they are most informative Some Family History Centers have copies of the microfilm on their local shelves; if not, they can be obtained at a very low cost from Salt Lake City or other distributions points around the world. Ask those friendly Mormons to help. I've closely examined the film held at the Hyde Park FHC, London. The name Pendergast and its variants are to be found there. Registers for neighbouring parishes are more elusive. John Egan (of Tuam descent)

    3. If he was Church of Ireland most of those church records for the area surrounding Tuam have survived. The smaller churches in the area forwarded their books to St. Mary's as they closed down over the last 100 years. Several books are still kept in the St. Mary's church vault but most were sent to the Church Library in Dublin several years ago. I know one book is missing. 1. Murphy - Lynch
    2. Hi, I am posting to this board because I don't know where my great-grandmother's sister settled. She was Honor (called Nora) LYNCH born in Ireland about 1864. I don't know for sure that she married Michael MURPHY, but they were godparents to her niece, Mary Martin in 1889. I thought that maybe Nora and Michael were engaged and they later married. Thanks, Carol

    3. Hi Listers: After much searching I found my Great Grandfather John Pendergast at the PRO at Kew. He was listed among the deserters of the British Army. I never knew his regiment, only that per Aunt Nonie --"he was in the British Army and they treated him mean so he swam the channel and came to America." She also mentioned that he had received the Victoria Cross. That was not true. I suspect the channel swim was a bit of a stretch too. Deserters records are very good. They tell you the place where the enlistment occurred. John enlisted in Tuam on June 7 1847. He was in the 63 Regiment of Foot. He deserted on May 8, 1850 at Bury. (From another site it was known to be a place where Galway people fled during the famine.) It is a place close to Liverpool where other ancestors left for America. His age at enlistment was 25 3/4. So John was born around September 1824. Does anyone have access to baptismal records for the area around Tuam for that time frame. He and his wife had three children after marrying in Brooklyn, New York. None had any Pendergast godparents. Any assistance would be appreciated. Pauline San Diego

    3. Any info on an Tully's of Peterswell is appreciated. They may have died off but I can't find anything on them. Female Tully (no first name) married Mickaleen Ward. Most likely a Michael but only known as Mickaleen. I have all his children's info and his sibling info but nothing on his wife's family. I see some Tullys came from Sonnagh and might have been her family and she came down the mountain but don't know. Thank you. Karin A. Joyce

    1. etc.......Re: [GALWAY] Anybody heard of the name EOIN
    2. Dr. Jane Lyons
    3. Peter, The name Eoin is given as an English translation of the Latin name Johannes or Johannis - as are John and Ian. There is in Irish, a name - Eoghain for which the translation is given as Owen or Eugene - Owen being the most common translation. Eoin, would be another spelling or translation of Eoghain. So, it's a case of take your pick I guess. Johannes and Johannis are more often than not taken as being = John. Statistically, the number of people named in English as Ian or Eoin, compared to John, who carried either of these two Latin names in Baptismal records, but who would have been called Eoin or John in real life is very small. A few things need to be taken into consideration in deciding which name this really was. Latin was the common language in Roman Catholic parish records where Irish was spoken. A child, who would be known as Eoghain / Eoin or Owen in the spoken word would be named Johannes or Johannis in the parish records - so long as the records are in Latin. The name Ian would be rare amongst Catholics. If, you found this name in records that are in English - then, the most likely translation for it, depending on whether you are dealing with Catholic or Protestant records, would be Eoin/Eoghain = Owen, or else Ian. Eoin/Eoghain = Owen - most likely if the source is Catholic - and even that if Protestant, compared to Ian. Ian would be a much more uncommon name - and most likely given to a child of Protestant parentage. In the final decision as to whether or which, it would have to be a name that follows through from generation to generation. At that, you'd still be guessing - but maybe with a better chance. 2. My book of Irish names says: EOIN is an Irish form of JOHN, from the Latin JOHANNES, rather than the later SEAN, from the Norman-French JEHAN. Possibly related to the Scottish -Gaelic Iain. Cathy

Karen, Just reading your email and I would be very happy to receive any information on Castle Daly, especially the marriage of Edward O'BRIEN and Mary CAHILL as I only the information from her Death Certificate (her parents were Patrick CAHILL and Bridget O'LOUGHLIN), it is difficult to find anything on Edward here in Queensland as it is a reasonably common name, and I would need to get his parents names to find his death here. 3. Mary Jo, The closest townland I could find was Ballynahattina, Baroney Tiaquin, Civil Parish Killosolan, Poor Law Union of Mountbellew. Ballynahattina is listed on a weather map as 2.7 nm south of Moylough. A Google Image search for Moylough Map will turn up a fairly detailed map of the area, but the town isn't listed on it. It is just outside of my Ordnance Survey Map 47, so I can't be more specific. Sue Where in Galway is/was Ballinhattina? Is there an on-line map that would show me? I think it is in East Galway. 3. Hellos everyone, I am attempting to assist someone else in their research and am looking for any information on the following person and his family whom nothing in known about. Bernard CUNNIFFE born about 1887 in Galway Ireland. He married an Ethel Jane GILBY (English ) either in Ireland or England their first child was born in 1915 in England. I cannot trace a marriage in England for them at present so can only assume they married in Ireland pre 1915. They ultimately lived in Hampshire England. Would anyone have access to the 1891 or 1901 census, it would be greatly appreciated if any little piece of information on Bernard or his family was found. I found on another site someone else looking for information on a CUNNIFF family who lived in Ballymoe Galway and I have emailed him but as yet not reply - this family had a Bernard in it and the father was Michael. Thank you and best wishes Susan Allen Tacoma NSW Australia

    1. Re: [GALWAY] Help with CUNNIFFE/CUNNIFF
    2. Susan, Why don't you, or whoever you are checking for, simply check the the Irish birth indexes for c. 1887, and the Irish marriage indexes for c 1905-15? Much easier than trying to locate someone on a non-indexed census. (I presume you are referring to the British census-there was no surviving 1891 Irish census) Cathy
