    1. ROAD SIGNS IN GAELIC AND ENGLISH
    2. lynsmum
    3. Hi all, We have just come back from a trip to Clare and Kerry and on our day trips ventured into Galway and Limerick. Yes the signage is both or sometimes only one but the number of times we went past the 'wanted' street was unbelievable due to NO signage at all. My husband said 'we got to see more of the country that way'. To fly out we drove from Dingle Kerry to Dublin ... about 4 1/2 hours .......the main holdup was leaving the 100 kmph highway to get to the airport through road works etc. I purchased the Discovery Series (Ordnance Survey of Ireland) a little dear but well worn out now. Take the umbrella and raincoat....I always do. Do enjoy your holiday. Michele in Sydney Australia

    1. Road signs in West of Ireland
    2. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
    3. Have the signs changed since 1996? I don't remember having any trouble driving in Galway, Limerick, Kerry, Cork, etc. The signs were in two languages. I recommend going with a large fold-up map of Ireland, such as you can buy in a large bookstore in Pittsburgh. This is not good for genealogy, just for driving around. Also, days will be short and probably rainy in October, why rates are cheaper then. Don't plan to drive too much in a day. Message text written by INTERNET:IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com >Hi, I am going to Ireland in October with my uncle and we will be renting a car at the airport. We will be spending the major portion of our trip in the West and have heard the most signs are now written in Irish. Is there a book or pamphlet listing all of the names and giving the meanings in English? I think it may make our trip a little easier if I can find one. Thank you. Carol Pittsburgh< Elizabeth W. 2. Dear Tom Cargin is in Tuam PLU. According to the records I have, the Valuation for Tuam PLU was printed 10 december 1855. All of Galway was completed in 1855+ 1856 . Looks like the valuers worked west to east across the county - Oughterard was Jan 1855, and Ballinasloe Nov.1856. Cathy

    1. John Finn -Aughrim + "strays"
    2. I have been passed these details by Bob Law.... I have a record from a tombstone of John Finn who died and is buried in Franklin, Simpson County, Kentucky the inscription says John Finn born Aughrim County, Galway Ireland April 16, 1790. John died in Simpson County October 23, 1844. He married Frances Bigger in Virgnina, USA September 6, 1820. John is supposed to have come to Philadelphia in 1816 but I have found no record to prove that......... I thought this information on the Finn family might be helpful to someone. John was a Catholic in America........ There were no Finns listed in Griffiths for Aughrim. ........ Does anyone know of a "strays " page anywhere? Now and again I come upon people in the records who seem to be so completely out of place... I recently found an Edward Bell, an Inspector General of police in the West Indies, in Dunmore East in 1905. There are also several English and Scots who appear on the 1901 and 1911 on postings, connected with the fishing industry. Unless they have some inside information, anyone trying to locate these people as family members are going to be struggling. So if you do know of somewhere it would be worthwhile to post these names, could you let us know? Regards cathy

    3. Cathy I checked with the society of Genealogists some time ago and found that Francis was someone who had been registered but was having time off.Any genealogists know him? Maire CathOneill@aol.com wrote: Dear Listers Some of you have been able to access Otherdays without any problems, but many of us have been having difficulties since the site shut down briefly at the end of January. In spite of numerous e-mails and phone calls, I have not been able to log-on to the site since that date. I continued this one-sided correspondence with Otherdays for several months, and then contacted ODCA, which is the Irish consumer affairs department. Let me just say that I think Otherdays is the best Irish website, and I desperately want it to stay in business. However, to do so, it must respond to it's customers. I won't bore you with all the details, but Alan Ryan, one of the directors of Otherdays, told ODCA, that although the site had experienced serious computer problems, it was up and running normally, though not accepting payment from new subscribers. This was clearly not the case. He promised to check into my membership and re-instate me. Nothing happened. After further complaint, I received the following e-mail from Alan Ryan: "Otherdays currently has no employees and is really only ticking over, I do not work for them and as such can not really help you, I will however see if I can contact someone who can." A truly remarkable statement, I'm sure you'll agree ! And he obviously couldn't contact anyone because my situation didn't change. Still unable to log-on. Back to ODCA once again. I received this e-mail from them yesterday: ...... Following several failed attempts to contact Mr Alan Ryan of Otherdays I passed the case over to a field Inspector to visit their office. There is now a restaurant in the building and the entire premises is on the market "FOR SALE". The Inspector has found another address and will call there to try to establish contact with the Directors. We will inform you when we have any further details.............. So I regret to say, it looks like our worst fears are being realised. Let's hope one of the other genealogy websites makes them an offer. Otherdays has so many useful databases, it would be such a waste if they simply disappeared. I don't know how many other dissatisfied subscribers complained to ODCA. If anyone would like to add their voice, please contact me and I will give you the relevant details.Maybe more complaints will give it a higher priority, as this has been moving very slowly indeed. I will report again when I get any new information. This e-mail is being sent to several Irish lists, so apologies if you receive it more than once. 1. Bernard Rochford. and Patrick Egan
    2. Matt Murphy
    3. Greetings from sunny Sydney (its the middle of winter but you'd never know) I am seeking info about a bloke called Bernard Rochford (Rochfort) who was charged with 'administering illegal oaths' and sent to Sydney for life, arriving in 1820. While in Oz he was a bit of a miscreant and I am doing some research on him. His mate was a guy called Patrick Eagan (Egan). They arrived in Sydney together, were partners in crime out here for a while and, as i can understand were also arrested together. Rochford was born in c.1760 in Loughrea and died in Sydney in 1839. Egan was born in c. 1787 in Ballinasloe and left Sydney in about 1835. Any info on their life in Eire would be appreciated. matt Murphy

If you can do without the final vowel sound in the name, there are North and South versions of Ballynacregg which are a bit closer to Athenry. They are in Cummer civil parish. B. South is just south of Corofin village/small town, while B. North is a couple of miles WNW of B.
