Does anyone know where i can get hold of service records for the Irish Free State Army? My Tuam born grandfather, we think served with them in the 1920s. Mark
Hi John in Yonkers, I find Joanna to be a form of Joan. In Bridget Hillary's case Joanna may have been a pet family name, or a middle name. Joan
Hello, I have found an immigration record in the Castle Gardens archives for an ancestor that was listed in the Ship's Register as "Bridget Hillary". Her age at date of landing would be correct, however the family knows her as Johanna Hillary. I know that Bridget and Delia are interchangeable. But could Bridget be Johanna? Thank you. John in Yonkers
Any ideas on how to find an e-mail address of a priest in Ireland? david
I purchased a book called" Best Little Guide to Ireland". I had picked up a brochure at an Irish festival held locally and ordered it. The person who recommends the B&B's has stayed in all of them and it tells you if they accept vouchers or not. Dottie
I am looking for any help I can get with research on David /O'Kellia/ b. 1626 to John /O'Kellia/ and Anne /Daly/ in Castle Blakenly Parish. -- "You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions." - Naguib Mahfous
We have always used CIE vouchers but on our last journey back to Ireland (last June 2004) we heard from a number of B&B folk that many B&Bs were only "reserving" a few rooms for vouchers. Vouchers are a discount, so the B&B folks do not get full "pay" when they take them. I found in the more remote places, and especially at :"non-touristy" times (Feb-April and Sept-Oct),vouchers are more easily used. A cousin has a B&B in the Ballinamore area of County Leitrim and she feels the vouchers are an important advertisement for their B&B. It will be interesting what CIE says..... I agree with Joan, contact CIE and tell them about your dilemma. They are the agent, make it their problem. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Dasmi1170@aol.com> To: <IRL-GALWAY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 07, 2005 9:53 PM Subject: [GALWAY] Galway - lost in translation? > Hi, > > Is it necessary to make all of your B&B and Farmhouse stays before you go? > > We always make reservations for the first night and then make them as we > > move along. Sandra & Betty, Sandra wrote <I haven't come across the McDERMOTT name yet but the information I have on the CONNOLLYs is from Co. Galway> I have McDermott relations. Not long ago, I received a a copy of a letter my cousin sent me. In the letter from St. Basil-Visitation in Chicago, it describes seven baptisms of seven of the twelve baptisms of my grandmother and her siblings. It gives the name of the child, the parents, and the sponsors. The seventh baptism is of my grand aunt Agnes. The parents are my great grandparents - Michael McDermott & Mary (nee Fitzpatrick) McDermott. However, the sponsors are John & Mary McDermott - (no notation of Mary's maiden name). The date of baptism is 03 May 1891. My great grandfather was from County Mayo. I have no knowledge of any siblings, only some conjectures. However, I do know that Michael's father, also Michael, married a Mary McHugh in 1847 in County Mayo. I do not know if this helps. Hi, Is it necessary to make all of your B&B and Farmhouse stays before you go? We always make reservations for the first night and then make them as we move along. Maybe, your deal is different. Perhaps you will have to get in touch with CIE and ask for suggestions. Joan
We are traveling to Ireland soon. We bought the CIE package that allows B&B and Farmhouse stays, but it seems that nobody has availability. I found many where I would indicate an interest in certain requirements and days, and they would respond "yes", and then when I mentioned vouchers, suddenly the reservation opportunity dried up. Am I missing something or is my approach wrong? Help me understand....I want this entire vacation to go very well but feel I've already reached a stumbling block of sorts! Thanks.
We used vouchers in 1985 and found that they were accepted by some, but generally speaking they preferred cash. I think the vouchers were discounted so they had to pay a premium on them of some sort. Also, we checked in the with Tourist Board, once we got to Ireland, and they directed us to places that would accept vouchers. (it was limiting though) When we were at the tourist office they even called ahead for us, and sometimes the people have their own network, so to speak, and often they would know someone in the next place we wanted to stay. This worked out very well. If they didn't have any suggestions, we just stopped by the tourist office and they called ahead for us. Personally speaking, I have been back 4-5 other times and never used vouchers again. We only reserved the first night in our first stop (Dublin) so we would have a destination without any hassle after the flight. Then we just went from day to day as we chose, and NEVER had a problem. Hi Betty: I haven't come across the McDERMOTT name yet but the information I have on the CONNOLLYs is from Co. Galway... I have Mary CONNOLLU getting married to Patrick ROONEY in Craughwell, Co. Galway on 2/14/1858. Their children were born in Cahercrin, Co. Galway. Do you have any other locations listed beside the Galway that you mentioned? Paula, I don't have anything on a Margaret or Celia Callanan. Mine were from the Kilconnell (Aughrim) area in the 1820's to 1860's. Sorry. John
Someone told me that while they have transcribed 10 million records, they have 2 million yet to be put in the database. I guess it takes volunteers. Betty Pace
John, Do you have anything on a Margaret Callanan (Callinan) married to a Patrick Grealey (Greeley) or a Celia Callanan married to Martin Holland? Paula
Modern researchers suggest the blame for many mis-spelt names lies with ships' passenger manifests rather than with the immigration officials at Castle Garden and Ellis Island. Photographs appear to show immigration people merely resding out the names on the lists provided to them by ships' masters.
