RE the RIC ... What did it take to join up in the 1850s or so? Were young men actively recruited? According to his file, my g'g'father was recommended by E.H. Burke, J.P. (magistrate) in Loughrea in November 1853. After some months he was 'allocated' to South Tipp. About 2 years later he left the RIC. The Connaught Rangers - a renowned and much-decorated Regiment of the British Army - the 88th Regiment of Foot. Jo >From what I can find, it seems the 88th didn't go to S.Africa until 1877, so worth checking the dates when you get to Kew. It might be he was stood down after the India campaign and went to S.Africa on his own. The experts at Kew will know! Kew also holds Irish Militia records for Galway, so you might want to see if he is listed there as well. Chances are he was part of the local militia before he joined the Army. The 88th Colours hang in St. Nicholas Church in Galway -you can see the honours for the various battles of the Peninsular campaign - Talavera, Badajoz, Busaco etc. Cathy
Your not the only one, I would love a house there, I was told that in the winter it's hard to see your hand in front of your face. But that's okay it's very quite there and peaceful of course it's not like here were you are not far from a store or a shopping mall of course that does depend on where you live in the states. I only saw O'Malley's where there is store to buy food along with Clark's Pub having some items, milk and such. My family went to Boston and New York and Chicago. My great-grandmother's home was out in the middle of field and for likes of me I cannot figure out how she was able to leave her home with the rocks ( I even fell because of those rocks) and the field has a natural spring sounding it and it was very hard to be able to get out in that field, took the 4 trip to be able to get out there and my great-grandmother lived to 97. Kathy Do you have the address for that parish priest. Can you have him do a search via the mail. I have Greens that have possible connections to Kings, Conneelys. It sounds like your people came from around the same area. Mine lived in the Calla, Clifden and Roundstone areas of Western Galway. The father RIC originally from Longford. The son Godfrey Green born 1835 Ballynakill - listed as church of Ireland. The wife (RC) Honora (O'Mealy). Though I have looked at the Parish films I have not contacted the churches to see if they have any addittional records. Also do you know how the Connaught Rangers differ from the RIC? Thanks for these... The Shop Street John Allen is the one I am most familiar with as a relative of mine told me he had traced the Allen's back to that street but as far as I can tell he was simply going on the fact that my ancestor Martin Allen listed Tuam as his place of origin with no other clear evidence of a link! If I had more details on John of Shop Street such as childrens names, D.O.B's etc I could prove one way or t'other... but I don't have the knowledge or skills at the minute Simon Allen -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Phyllis M. Thanks, I'll try that trick! Diane
