You should be able to learn more about James's family from the Peterswell RC records, which go back to 1854 on LDS film 0979692, item 4. You should be able to get the civil record of Charles's 18867 birth from the GRO (www.groirenland.ie). Diane
As far as I can see there 97 townlands surrounding Ballinasloe. there is Dunlo, Dunlo Hill and Dunlo Street.I have a booklet callled Ballinsloe in the days that have been compiled by Noel Farrell with the census for 1901, 1`911 and griffiths valuation etc. It mentioned two books that are a must for anyone wishing to find out about Ballinasloe's history. The Parish of Ballinasloe, its History by Patrick K. egan and innue agus inne by Tadhg Mac Lochlann. It says that both can be purchased locally (ie Ballinasloe). It does not say whether this was the civilparish or otherwise. All I can say from personal experience is that the only time people put down the correct townland is when they vote and fill in the census or apply fro planning permission. The voting register is compiled using the townlands we are familiar with. Otherwise people are notoriously inaccurate when putting down the place of birth. They may put down the nearest well known area . As far as researchers are concerned it might as well be Hy-Brasil or the Yellow Brick Road. With the possibility of postcodes being brought in soon there is a chance that people might have to be slightly more accurate. There were a lot of reasons why people with non local names might be in Ballinasloe. There was the assylum ,the military encampment the estates and various other orgaisations in the area. I found a Margaret Conway working as a draper in no 7 Dunlo Hill in the 1901 census. I did not lokk in the 97 townlands surrounding the town. I am trying to find some information on my gggf James Noone b. 1820 Peterswell, Galway who had a son named Charles Gallagher Noone born in Ireland (6/4/1867 - 7/14/1938) and immigrated to US in 1883. Any information on websites or the family would be appreciated. Thank yoiu, Rosaleen Noone **************One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. Try it now. Rosaleen, did Charles Gallagher Noone live on West End Ave in New York City and have a wife Rose and a son Charles Peter Francis Noone born 20 Nov 1894? If so, online at ancestry.com, I found the family in the 1900 US census and also a World War I draft registration card for the younger Charles that states he was born at Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, Ireland and a naturalized US citizen. According to the 1900 US census, the younger Charles was the only child in this family born in Ireland - the rest were born in New York. I also found Rose Noone returning to the US with the children (James, Charlotte, Mary A, Domenick, Charles) on the ship Servia from Liverpool and Queenstown, arriving at New York on 19 Feb 1895. If you did not already know this, perhaps this information will give you some clue about your family in Ireland, even though it's not the generation you were asking about. The Mormon's index (IGI) has extractions from Irish civil registration births for some time periods, but your Charles Noone b. 1867 does not seem to be there. The East Galway Family History Society has records online at http://galwayeast.brsgenealogy.com/. Searching the indexes is free, but you must register. If you find something, it is 5 Euro per record. It looks like the records online for Peterswell (Kilthomas) RC parish don't begin until the 1850s (click "Sources" on the bar at the top of the page to see what records are included, and "Map" to go to other counties or societies, like Galway West). You might want to look around at neighboring parishes too and at records for County Leitrim, if Charles Peter Francis Noone is from your family. Good luck with your research and Happy New Year to everyone on the list! May the new year bring you all new information about your families. Go to Ballinasloe.com (or .org, either works). There is a good section for searching the history of the area and therein you should find the number to order the film for parish records, which actually start much earlier than 1864. The first entry for one of my families was 1821. Have fun.
You have a lot of information--have you searched parish or civil records? Diane
Thank you Diane for your response. I hadn't heard of the failteromhat.com site. It looks promising, as does some of the links it has regarding Irish research. If you look for Galway Walkers and Roscommon Burkes on the failteromhat.com Griffith's index, you'll see Walkers in two Galway parishes on the Roscommon border--Athleague and Kilcloony. Both of those parishes adjoin Roscommon parishes with Burkes--Athleague, Fuerty, and Dysart. (Of course, Griffith's was done after your ancestors emigrated, but most families stayed in the same area for generations.) It's possible your ancestors married in one of those Roscommon parishes, though you'd need to check the Irishtimes site to see how far back RC parish records go if your ancestors were Catholic. Diane

Listers - I do some transcriptions of records from Scotland. The parish records are very hard to read unless you know the names of the families in the parish. I would suggest you read the original parish records. We are not paid to do transcriptions; its all voluntary. We try our best, but many times there are no people to go back after our work and make sure we got it right. Also, many times the parish clerk got it wrong. My own experience was the parish clerk wrote down the wrong surname of the mother for one of my ancestors. After much research, I realized that the parish clerk wrote down the surname of the wife of one of the witnesses to a baptism. So, there were many chances for an error. If you study paleography, you realize that many times an "o" looks like an "e" or vice versa. Also, an "H" may look like another letter of the alphabet. Most names were written out as they sounded (phonics). Unless you go back to the original record, there may be much confusion, and even then there were errors. Look for other Flaherty's in the records, and maybe you'll be able to figure out who made the error and what it should read. I recently contacted the National Archives in London and suggested a transcriber had made the error of putting in a given name of Helena instead of Elenor. Its tough. I'd like some input. I have a baptismal record that I believe has an error. The information has been translated and entered into a computer database. The name of the mother now reads "Hartz". A distant cousin has a certificate from several years ago that reads "Flaherty", which agrees with family tradition. I believe there was either a typo or misreading. I think the "FL" was misread as an "H" and the "rty" was misread as "rtz". I have seen "Hartz" now online as the name of the mother. There were no other baptismal records on that date, which agrees with the child's Civil War information, in that location, which also agrees with the Civil War info., with the correct father. The "old" priest had recently died when I requested the information. I was told he had been the translator, and the books were no longer available to anyone. I have received no response from the "young" priest. Would you leave this alone, assume the rest of the info is correct? Push for a correction? I would like some input. Hello all. I was given a family tree containing Lally family members but with no dates whatsoever. They were to have married into the Costello family lines (Martin, Bartley, or Eamon) somewhere between 1800 and 1900. The Costellos were from Cornarone, Co Galway near the coastline of Galway Bay. The family farm is still occupied. I have given up on tracing them as I had so little to go on. This is the Lally information I have so far. Patrick Lally m. Margaret Gannon. Nick Lally m. Maisie McDonogh, da of Patrick and Peggy McDonough. Peggy was the da. of Martin Costello (b. c. 1853 in Cornarone) m. Nau Feeney. Their children were Mary, Nan, Bridget, Peggy, Kate, Barbara, Nora, Martin. Nick and Maisie Lallly's children were Patrick, May, Sean, Margaret, Seanus, Michael, Paul, and Kevin. It was this Patrick who married Mararet Gannon. As you can see, not very much information related by Costello family member considered the family senache or historian. As far as I know, no family bible exists. The Costellos were all Catholic. Any help offered will be gladly received. I'll help wherever I can. I am the daughter of Martin Costello and Anne Noone of Cornarone, Noone being another name I'm having trouble with. All but one of their children emigrated to the US in the 1910-1920 and settled in and around Washington, DC. Maureen Gamble Co.
