    1. Re: [IRL-GALWAY] Nugent
    2. Geralyn Barry
    3. Helen, Ballinasloe is indeed the name of a town. Ballinasloe Town is partly in County Roscommon and partly in County Galway. The Galway part is in the civil parish of Kilcloony, Barony of Clonmacnowen (sometimes written Clonmacnoon), Poor Law Union of Ballinasloe. See http://www.from-ireland.net/lewis/g/ballinasloe.htm for a description taken from Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837, and some other things that might be of interest. Also click there on Kilcloony for more information about the civil parish. There is also a short history of Ballinasloe Town at http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/history/chapter69.html. Parts of Ballinasloe Town were recorded in Griffith's Valuation in two different townlands: Dunlo and Townparks. It is possible your Nugent family lived nearby Ballinasloe rather than in the town itself. The only occupier named Nugent listed in the entire civil parish of Kilcloony was in the townland of Brackernagh (Cloncarty) - she was Maryanne Nugent, leasing a house, offices (this means outbuildings) and less than an acre of land from the Earl of Clancarty (immediate lessor). If your family was living in the town of Ballinasloe, it is unlikely they were listed in Griffith's Valuation unless they were fairly well-off and held a lease on their property. Weekly renters were not counted in Griffith's, and that included many people in towns and cities. You may want to look at the parish registers for Ballinasloe, which are indexed online at the Galway East Heritage Center (part of IFHF, online at http://galwayeast.brsgenealogy.com). Searching there is free, but you must register first. If you find something of interest, the charge to see a transcription of the record online is 5 Euro. You could also look at the LDS film: Parochial registers of Ballinasloe, Creagh and Kilclooney , 1820-1902. Includes index. The Catholic Parish of Ballinasloe, Creagh and Kilclooney includes the civil parishes of Kilcloony in county Galway, and Creagh in county Roscommon. There are chapels in the town of Ballinasloe and in the townland of Creagh. FHL Film 1279217 Items 9 - 17 Records for Ballinasloe (Creagh & Kilclooney) online include baptisms 1820-1900, marriages 1820-1900 and deaths 1825-1830. It looks like the early marriages might not be on the LDS film. I did a quick search online and the only NUGENTs with dates of 1845 and earlier that came up when I specified Ballinasloe (RC) parish are these: Parish: BALLINASLOE (RC): Church Baptism Nugent Mary 1838 Co. Galway Church Baptism Nugent Mary 1844 Co. Galway Church Baptism Nugent Mary 1845 Co. Galway Church Marriage Nugent Thos 1836 Co. Galway Church Marriage Nugent Julia 1836 Co. Galway Church Marriage Nugent Margaret 1943 [1843?] Co. Galway Church Marriage Nugent Richard 1920 [1820?] Co. Galway Church Marriage Nugent Robert 1924 [1824?] Co. Galway These last 3 records fall outside the dates of the records, unless someone meant to type dates in the 1800s instead of 1900s. Do any of these records match what you know about your Nugents? If not, you could try doing a search on the other Catholic parishes that were nearby, like Ahasgragh, Fohenagh & Killure, Aughrim & Kilconnell and Clontuskert. Sometimes people said they were from the nearest town, which might have been a couple of miles from where they actually lived. Just because your family information says Galway, don't ignore Co. Roscommon, since part of Ballinasloe town was in Roscommon. People who lived along county borders might have moved only a few yards (or across the river), but it put them into another county and another set of records to be searched. I have lots of cases of things like that happening in my families that lived along the Tipperary-Laois border. By the way, my g-gfather's second wife was Ellen Nugent, but her Nugent family was from Piltown, County Kilkenny, very close to the border with Tipperary and Waterford. I hope this helped. 3. Tom--I have been trying to put together all the dates with your probelm.  The times of the Great Hunger were very difficult.  People made all kinds of decisions that they and we w9ould not think posssible.   It seems to me that the two girls were quite young when the parents emigrated.  It might be possible that the parents left without them, leaving them with grandparents, relatives, or neighbors.  I'm sure that if this was the case the idea was to send for the girls in short time once the parents were established and could send money.  Maybe that took longer than they thought.   As someone else already saidm they were fortunate to join up together, even with the length of time.  Many families lost thenmselves completely   Kathleen                             t --- On Tue, 12/30/08, Phyllis M. 3. Thanks! Ballygar was one our main areas of search. When we visited Ireland in 2004, we we stayed there (found lots of Naughtons and Nolans), and went through the old graveyard just outside of town--the new graveyard is behind the church, but the old one had headstones over 100 years old. We also visited the Parish office and school, and went through Griffiths Valuation with an "old expert". No luck! 2. I assume you've searched the Killian RC parish records for the baptisms of Honora and Bridget. Since parish records listed only baptisms and marriages (and sometimes funerals) and civil records, beginning in 1864, only births, marriages, and deaths, it's unlikely that there would be any records of the girls between their baptisms and their coming to America. Unfortunately, passenger lists are pretty spotty, especially for that era and for children who may have been travelling with adults of a different surname, perhaps a married aunt and her husband. The family was quite lucky to have been reunited, as many families separated during the famine were not. Diane

    3. Sometimes when they are not in the same household they are servants for another family in the same town or they came first as servants, did they marry and come over with the new surname?? 3. The reference to Peterswell RC Parish film is interesting as I have been trying to find a birth, baptismal of a Mary CAHILL daughter of Patrick CAHILL and Bridget O'LOUGHLIN, Mary is a sister of my gggrandfather Thomas CAHILL, who I found after Thomas had died Intestate at Toowoomba Qld, and in the paperwork I found he left the Custody of his children (all being under the age of 21 years) to their Paternal Uncle Edward O'Brien. I found Mary listed on the Qld Death Index and on her death certificate her husband, Edward O'Brien stated that she was born in Peterswell and they married at CastleDaly. The LDS film I got out previously did not have any information on either her baptism or their marriage. Thomas was shown on the Gort Marriage register was being from Adrahan, nothing on Sarah Skehill his wife. I have not been able to find anything on their parents or any other family. I will check to see if this is the same film I had previously from the LDS. Any information appreciated Barbara Robinson BNE, QLD Australia Where today Brisbane is a very hot muggy 30 deg C plus ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 30, 2008 3:28 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-GALWAY] Noone Family > You should be able to learn more about James's family from the Peterswell > RC > records, which go back to 1854 on LDS film 0979692, item 4. 3. I have been searching for over a year now on this dead end, and have gotten nowhere. I would appreciate some suggestions, please. Patrick Nolan (b 1822, Parish of Killiane, Galway, d 29 Mar 1900, Jersey City, NJ) and Catherine Naughton (b 1825, County Galway, d 12 Jul 1893, Jersey City, NJ) arrived at NYC 31 Jul 1849 on the Ship Cremonia. What is interesting is they had two daughters while in Galway: Honora E. Nolan (b 1846) and Bridget Nolan (b 19 May 1848). However, these two daughters were not listed on the passenger list of the Ship Cremonia, nor in the Philadelphia census for 1850 (where Patrick and Catherine first lived), nor in the NYC Census for 1860 (where they moved after Philadelphia). However, Patrick and Catherine (and their six boys they had in Philadelphia and NYC) moved to Jersey City in 1868. Bridget and Honora were on their census in 1870 in Jersey City. On Briget's death certificate (d 30 May 1931), it stated she lived in the USA for 65 years. >From the clues above, it appears the daughters came over about 1866, but I have been unable to find any ships passenger list with them on it. Also, where would I find them in Ireland for the period 1849-1866? I have written away, and gotten records from both the East and West Galway Historical sites, and no luck. I have searched many LDS films, again with no luck. I continue to search ships records from Ireland 1865-1867 for the two daughters, but no luck. Help, I am at a stone wall! Thanks! Tom Novak
