    3. How was Rowan pronounced? I am a Rowan researcher. I attended a family reunion a few years ago and when I pronounced the name Ro-WAN I was told I was "rising above my raising" :^). The few people who have been related pronounced the name as spoken by my mother. The reunion folks used ROW-in as their pronunciation. I would think Rohan would sound like my family name. I think my family came from county Mayo. Do you know any Rowan's who emigrated to Maryland, USA? ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, March 10, 2009 4:00:38 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-GALWAY] Names in Gaelic For what it's worth.... We knew my family as Rowan and that's what we stuck with in our research. However, we started finding early U.S. records showing Roughan, Rohan, etc. Sure as shootin'...we found the records in Limerick as Roughan, Rohan, Roohan, etc. I never, ever, found my families as Rowan (in Limerick) in the Giffith's, baptisms, etc. My Galway side always used Welch in the U.S. When researching records in Galway, the name (in 1820's, 1840's) was exclusively Walsh. 3. Would the spelling of names change when written in Gaelic? The reason I ask is because numerous people have insisted that my Hanlon family would have been Halloran in Peterswell.

    3. It is correct that Irish death certificates do not contain a lot of information but they do have more than what is on the index. I have some from the 1860s onwards and they have: Date and place of death, age and marital status of deceased, occupation, cause of death, name and sometimes address of informant, and whether they were present at the death. Two have relationship of informant to deceased but this is rare I think. A copy of the certificate can be ordered from the GRO in Ireland - prices and procedure are posted on their website: http://www.groireland.ie/ A lister mentioned recently that the numbers used by the LDS project refer to their own record system rather than the volume and page numbers of the actual indexes. I do not know if that is correct, however the Irish BMD indexes are available on microfilm from LDS Family History Centres etc and the actual index numbers can be obtained from those and a certificate ordered. Having the information from the LDS site would be invaluable in searching the microfilms. There may be other ways but this is what I have used (as well as personal visits to the GRO). Hope this is useful. Patsy - New Zealand Subject: Re: [IRL-GALWAY] Galway records > What the LDS have filmed is the actual death register, and that's all that > exists. 2. If by the LDS project you mean the project search site, the volume and page numbers for each indexed item refer to the registration volume, but the film number refers to the index. If you order the registration from the GRO, give them the year, volume and page. To get it from the LDS (they've filmed birth registrations for 1864-81, 1900-13, and 1930-55, marriage and death for 1864-70), you need to figure out the registration film number, which you can get from their on-line catalog.
