I don't know about the heritage center, but the LDS have filmed the Gort/Kilmacduagh parish records. Diane
I ran into that many years ago, also have sent money with nothing. they have records online but I don't know what name you are looking for http://www.irish-roots.ie/galway-west.asp sometimes the Galway Library can give you directions On Mar 28, 2009, at 12:45 PM, Karen Meng wrote: > Would the West Galway Center have any records for the Gort area? Would the West Galway Center have any records for the Gort area? East Galway had nothing that applied to my family even though that was where they lived.

West Galway Family history has some records before 1850 I have found some of my Long family there but the church my lot used was one which had its roof blown off with the big wind. The records have Thomas John Nagle baptised 1827 and a marriage of a Martin 1844. Griffiths valuation on the same site lists 11 men with this surname. I had looked for this name as we were trying to trace the birth place of a Benjamin Nagle who fought in the Charge of the Light brigade in 1854. All our local society in Halifax West Yorkshire knows about him, is that he was a native Irish man, and became permanent Sergeant in the West Yorks Yeomanry Cavalry regiment. He must have become very well known in the town as he was given a civic funeral in 1871 when he died at the age of 45. 1000 mourners attended the funeral and although we know where he was buried the grave was unmarked and the society would like to set up some sort of memorial.
Go to LDS they have a lot of records and everyone is welcome. good luck with your research Mary **************Free Credit Report and Score Tracking! Get it Now for $0 at CreditReport.com. I an lucky, my Birmingham's were a family of the first settlers there and when i went there a couple of years ago. I was very welcomed and my one cousin took me everywhere . He told me the priest was not a native so would not know anything. he showed me all of the old homes. On the Galway List I talked a lot with a man and come to find out he is a Birmingham. His mom is the cousin that showed me sister. So i will be going to Declans and then on to Mary and Franks. This is my cousins first trip. I paved the way for her. As far as the records. I think if you work hard enough you will find something. Records were hard because they burned them on purpose to make room for new. Lack of storage. My thing a birth record for Margaret and did she have any brothers and sisters. Franks son gave me a book on the family dating back to 1200 Phyllis On Mar 27, 2009, at 12:03 AM, Karen Meng wrote: > Recently, you asked what I accomplished while in Galway. Recently, you asked what I accomplished while in Galway. More than anything, I gained an understanding of the area and how my ancestors lived. I talked with a few people with the same surname, Nagle. Although they were very friendly, they did not seem interested in the family history. Because my family left about 1850, I was unable to find any records. I spoke with three priests. All said that they had no pre-1850 records. One went on to explain that the priests held masses in the fields to protect their congregation from persecution. Any records were purposely destroyed for protection of these families. I'm ready to go back. Maybe tax records or old estate records would provide information. There has to be something somewhere. Kitty, Galway was a corporation town - that is administered by a body separate to that of the county of Galway and it was called Galway Town. The old town, on the east side of the Corrib River, was originally enclosed in walls. The civil parish (and church parish) for this area was/is called St Nicholas. To the east of the Corrib River is the civil (and church) parish area of Rahoon. Parts of it close to the river could be seen as part of old Galway Town and the parish is certainly now part of modern Galway City. In the old days a lot of Rahoon parish was rural land. In the old town area the best thing to do is to walk. However the Clybaun area is on the western outskirts of the Galway City area so you might need transport to explore this area. The Galway City Library, on Nuns Island near the Catholic Cathedral, has copies of the old Griffiths Survey maps so you can spend time there locating the Clybaun townland sites of exactly where your families lived. You need to have with you, or you can look them up in the library, the original Griffiths survey lists as each entry has a number which relates to the maps. Have a great visit Mary >>I have some confusion as to "Galway Town". I find my King/Walsh families >>on the Griffiths in Clybaun, under Parish Rahoon, "Galway Town". It is funny that happens all the time. What hotel are you using? In Galway?? I have all the sites booked marked I'm looking at the Raddison because of the location. It is right by the train and the citylink bus for me to head to Dublin. I'm going to be going to the library in Dublin. Phyllis Birmingham-Carroll

When we were there Galway Town referred to the city it's self, not the County In a message dated 3/24/2009 10:38:17 A.M.
