Might there be a kind soul on this list who might be familiar with this church who could give ma a little history of this section of Dublin and the date when this church began? I don't know if I am searching the right parish, but I was pointed in this direction from some other family member who is also doing research on this elusive family. Looking for a FARNAN/FARNHAM family who would have had their children baptized at St. James in the 1800-1811 time period. Father is CORNELIUS FARNAN (born 1776) and mother is MARCELLA KEEFE. I also have a Reverend JOHN FARNAN was ordained by Bishop Troy at St. Mary's Cathedral in 1812 and may be related to CORNELIUS/akaNEAL. The priest was born about 1788. I have written to all the seminaries in Ireland who would have been around at the time and none could find a record of this priest, so they are indicating that he may have gone to seminary in Rome. But he was one of the first priests who was recruited to come to New York to serve the Catholics of New York City. I suspect that CORNELIUS and REV. JOHN FARNAN are related because I find them both in western New York in 1829. Very early, so not many records around to search. The parish is my only hope. Can anyone help me with info on how to get baptismal records from this church? I have the names if someone can research them at the church. Thank you so much for your help!! Marie
Marie - One of the best online sources is http://irishgenealogy.ie. Go to the tab for church records and fill out the search box. This site has many of the church records until the early 20th century. My experience has been that the individual parishes may want to assist but are understaffed and overwhelmed with the volume of requests. I visited what I believe to be my great grandfather's parish in Dublin earlier this fall. The pastor said they would check their records but it would take several months and not to expect hear anything until sometime in 2013 or later. I found on the Irish genealogy site that a Joannes (John) Farnan, son of Cornelius Farnan and Maragret Keefe, was baptized 17 July 1811 at St. James Catholic Church, Dublin. There are many other links to the Farnan and Farnham names there. The Church is located on James's Street, Dublin 8 near Kilmainham Gaol. Good luck!
