Dianna I omitted to say that Clifton Workhouse was in Stapleton, which is only a couple of miles from Bristol, although it is recorded as being in Gloucestershire. HI Joyce Thanks very much for that, so just to clarify did it say Robert Woodworth or just initials RW, seems such a shame as he had children etc, you would have thought that he would have been living with them. The area of Clifton does seem correct though. Many thanks Dianna
Dianna All the "Inmates" on the census are recorded with only their initials. The Age of R.W. was given as 77, Widower, born Ireland. The only thing against this is the fact that the death registration says "Woodward" not Woodworth. I wouldn't rule this out on account of the fact that the Workhouse may have registered the death and made this slight error when recording his name. There is a chance that this may still be your Robert. I have a g-g-grandfather who died in a Workhouse here in Ireland, and like you found it very hard to understand why. When I looked at the original records I found that he had gone in a number of times for short spells when he was ill, and eventually died there. By this time of his life he was living on his own. His son lived in a small cottage with wife and eight children so perhaps just no room. Also his son didn't live in the same town.
