    3. Anthony, Hope your recent trip to this side of the water was fruitful When myself and my brother Joey were at the GRO in september 2005. We had to provide two names to locate and get a copy of my grandparents marriage in 1897. Would what you are saying apply when I apply for certificates for my Great grand parents? 3. My experience at Dublin's GRO is that you only have to provide the name of one of the participants to a marriage. From their registers, they can then provide you with the name of the other party and all the other relevant details. Debby Raymond, Queensland, Australia

Got caught up in the floods at Oxford but survived with some very minor damage to the underside of the car - we were trying to get back to Oxford which was reasonably dry and got caught at the roundabout that leads to Tewksbury!! Who ever made you give two names at the GRO was acting the goat. If this sort of activity is widespread and continues I will complain to the director and get my fellow researchers to do the same. It is totally unnecessary indeed stupid, because a large number of folk would not know the two names. In the case of postal enquiries it may be that they will claim that there may be multible entries, but this even would be highly unlikely. I will reply to your original query early next week Regards

    3. Lots of traffic on this marriage question. Here are I hope some helpful hints. If you have access to the LDS marriage index and only know one of the names of the couple, and have a year, then you can search by surname and find the party you are looking for. The problem arises when both names are common like a John Murphy, for which there could be multiple entries. But if you know the registration district or recognize the geographic location and can place it in the right county, you can narrow the odds. Ideally, you can find the right one, then you have the YEAR, QUARTER VOLUME & PAGE. That should be sufficient for them to look it up and give you a copy of the marriage certificate. If you are a glutton for punishment, you can find the other name yourself in the index. What you have to do is to look through the entire quarter and find the identical entry for Volume and Page. An onerous task indeed that should not be necessary. The identity of the spouse is indeed useful in finding the right one, especially when there are many entries for the other party.
