hi Bev, A 'watch finisher' is a new occupation for me. Have come across watch makers before but never a 'finisher'. I wonder what that entailed. Will keep an eye out for him. Hi Judith It was not an uncommon occupation, for example there are over 2000 listed in the 1881 census of England and Wales They took components made by others and assembled watches Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 24/08/2012 13:54, Judith MacGregor wrote: > hi Bev, > > A 'watch finisher' is a new occupation for me. Michelle, This is only my experience but it may help. I also had a jeweller in the family (he was in Edinburgh) and he died in the Edinburgh asylum. Jewellers in those days used and worked with all sorts of toxic materials including lead and these killed them in the end. Have you thought of checking hospital or asylum records? Hello Judith and Michelle, My third great grandfather, Samuel Rawlins, was a "watch finisher" who apparently spent some time in Ireland. We have gleaned this information from family lore and references from records here in the States from son Samuel, who appears to have left Ireland for the US in 1867. Should any of you with ties to jewelers come across a Rawlins in your path, I would love to know about it. This branch of my family has also been hard to track. I do believe we had one sighting of Samuel jr. working in a pawn shop in Belfast in 1858. His name was mentioned in an article from the British Newspaper Archive. Of course, I could find no trace of family that I could recognize in the area!! One thing I know for sure is that jewelers and pawnshop owners often had considerable contact. I was hoping to mention the latest addition to Deansgrange - after the search engine added them - but I may forget by tomorrow. LOL So the latest news is that Joyce Tunstead has added part 5 of St. Mary's section, Deansgrange. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/dublin/photos/tombstones/deansgrange-ndx.htm This is the text file where you can use your browser to search for names of interest. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/dublin/photos/tombstones/1headstones/deansgrange-st-marys05.txt I am sorry to have to send you to the website to check out the text files. They are just too large and complex to fit nicely on the list. We have a size limit for postings which most of the text files would exceed. Not to mention the people's email programs could easily jumble up the lines, making a hash out of all the hard work that has gone into these files. I hope you find something of interest. Further to Joyce's reply, there is also an Elizabeth Dudley born to James Dudley & Mary Coghlan - perhaps the daughter who married Thomas Maguire? As well as the Henry born 1831, there is also a HENRY DUDLY born to parents James Dudly and Mary N/R in 1824 - perhaps the same parents, which means that the Henry born 1824 died. One of the sponsors of this Henry was Patt Dudly. There are also later Dudley births/baptisms with the name Henry - perhaps the next generation of Dudley's? Happy hunting. Hello Jim I had a quick look on the Glasnevin Cemetery Website at - http://www.glasnevintrust.ie/genealogy/ and I found that a JAMES DUDLEY was buried there in 1839 aged 48. I also found the name MARY DUDLEY twice, with a burial in 1834 and one in 1835 but no ages given for these two burials. The JAMES DUDLEY appears to be the only one in that grave. Both the MARY DUDLEYs have others buried with them. As HENRY and JAMES were orphaned when young the above burials might hold something for you. There is a baptism of a HENRY DUDLEY at St.Catherines RC Church Dublin in 1831 With Parents JAMES and MARY DUDLEY (nee COGHLAN). This is available on http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html Will be interested to hear if any of the above turns out to be your family. I am seeking information about my maternal great-great grandparents, James and Mary DUDLEY. They died sometime prior to 1852. They had at least three children: James (my great-grandfather) was born about 1830. He married Maria Knight, the daughter of Patrick and Mary Knight. Maria was born in County Mayo about 1826. James and Maria had six children born in Cincinnati, Ohio between 1855 and 1862. James died May 4, 1875 at the age of 45. Maria died in March 1874. Both are buried in St. Joseph Irish Cemetery in Cincinnati as are all of their children and those of James’ brother Henry. Henry was born about 1834. The two boys were orphaned when Henry was a young child. Henry and his brother James emigrated from Dublin to the United States and arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio around 1852. The boys had learned the shoemaking trade in Ireland and continued in that profession in America. Henry married Hannah Morgan who was born June 10, 1842 in Cork. She was the daughter of Richard and Mary (Dower) Morgan. Hannah was orphaned at the age of eight. Two years later she immigrated to Cincinnati with an uncle to join a sister and two brothers who were already in Cincinnati. Henry and Hannah married in May 1865. They had eleven children. A daughter married Thomas McGuire. I have no information about the daughter’s name. She and Thomas had two daughters: Kate and Mary Ann. The daughter had died by 1899 when Henry Dudley’s will established a trust for Thomas and the girls. I would appreciate any information about these families as well as suggestions where I might get more information if I were to visit Dublin.
I always wondered why, around the turn of the 20th century, my RORKE's became O'RORKE, and my CONNOR's became O'CONNOR's. But I've just read an interesting article by the GUILD OF ONE-NAME STUDIES which seems to explain it, as follows: "During the Gaelic Revival of the late 19th century, and the struggle for independence in the first quarter of the 20th century, nationalists began using the Gaelic prefixes of "O" and "Mac" before their surnames"............ So, it seems that the mystery is solved! Colette
