    3. Hello Joyce Thanks for your great work in recording all these headstones. I wonder if you can tell me if there are headstones for any of the Old Men's Asylum graves or are they all unmarked graves. I'm hoping to go to Dublin next year so it would be good to know. Elissa Western Australia

    2. Nivard Ovington
    3. The Diary of Mary Martin A Family at War: Mary Martin’s Diary, 1 January – 25 May 1916 is an online scholarly edition of the Diary of Mary Martin, a widow and mother of twelve children, living in the affluent Dublin suburb of Monkstown. Mary wrote the diary to her son Charlie, a soldier with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who went missing in action on the Salonika front, in the hope that one day he would return home and be able to read it. Set against the backdrop of the Easter Rising and the First World War, the diary chronicles the daily activities of Mary, her family, friends and relatives. http://dh.tcd.ie/martindiary/ -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

    2. Margaret Doyle
    3. Hi, Thanks for the info on the golf club, very interesting. There are two pages of Darleys in the 1939/40 electoral roles on dublinheritage, so I guess there must be Darley Families living in Dublin at present. Maggie

    3. Springfield still exists as a golf club. My ancestors were founder members and we recently returned some family trophies for their archive. Someone there must be able to give you some more information and an image. My family and the Darleys intermarried. My g grandfather Rutherfoord married Anna Louisa Darley (daughter of Judge Darley and his wife a Guinness heir) all of Fernhill in Kilternan. Fernhill now much as it was with gardens open to the public. I recently tried to find any surviving Darleys in Ireland without success. The people running fernhill may be able to give you some pointers. (fernhill has a website ) Wishing you luck Edward On 29 Sep 2012, at 02:39 AM, Margaret Doyle <johnmaggie11@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: > Google 'The Darley Family+distillery on Ardee street'. 3. Michael Here is a link to a Website on which you will be able to read that the Golf Club moved a bit due to building work going on at the Kilternan Hotel. http://www.golfinginireland.ie/clubs_courses/dublin/kilternan.htm I don't live too far from Kilternan and pass that way now and again. Next time I am in the area I will take a look at the current situation. Some of the maps on the Internet are showing the Golf Club at an incorrect place (showing it to be where the Church is, not the Golf Club). The Golf Club was a little further south on the Enniskerry Road, and if you have Google Earth you will be able to pick it out. Unfortunately I don't know anything about "Springfield". Joyce

    1. [DUBLIN-CITY] Springfield the home of George Darley.
    2. Michael Fitzgerald
    3. Dear Everyone, Greetings from South Australia. As I understand it, George Darley the poet’s home was called Springfield. In 1815 George’s sister, Mary Louisa Darley, married Charles Burton Newenham ‘in Dublin’. In 1837 Mary and George and their family together with their housekeeper, Mary Ann Holden and her two children, Jane and James, set sail for South Australia. They arrived in December 1837 less than twelve months after the first settlers had arrived. They lived in tents until Charles had built a house on leased land in the embryonic city. In 1842 Charles purchased land a few km from the city and built a home which was called Springfield House. I believe that Springfield in Dublin is now part of the Kilternan Golf and Country Club which has experienced some problems. My two requests are: 1. Does anyone know any more about Springfield? 2. Is is possible to obtain a photograph of all, or part, of the original Springfield? Thanking you for your patience. Regards, Michael

    3. Coroner's reports for Dublin are easy to come by, usually via the national archives in Bishop st. Wicklow is a different kettle of fish. I've been to Wicklow town searching for coroners reports without any luck. I spoke to the coroners secretary who told me they have no further info other than what's registered on the civil death cert. 3. Hi all Added to Ancestry yesterday NB these are as yet *browsable* only , I presume they will be made searchable at some point in time, still, access to browse is better than no access ================================ Irish records: 1763–1904 Thom’s Directory, 1904, was a major inspiration behind James Joyce’s celebrated novel Ulysses. Now you can see if these records of names, addresses and occupations across Ireland provide similar stimulation for your discoveries, in our new collection. At the same time, we’ve added scanned editions of 32 different Irish newspapers spanning more than 100 years. Ireland Newspapers, 1763-1890, could shed more light on your family’s role in crucial events like the Irish Rebellion and the Tithe War. -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

    2. Nivard Ovington
    3. Hi all A new database on Ancestry a birthplace search for Dublin gets 1,965 hits A keyword search for Dublin gets 4,828 (as many certificates were issued from Dublin) The database includes the certificates and more About Great Britain, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927 This database contains master and mate certificates issued to merchant seamen by the British Board of Trade. What You May Find in the Records Great Britain has long been known for its maritime prowess in both military and commercial spheres. The certificates and other documents included in this database were issued to merchant seamen who qualified as masters or mates aboard merchant ships. Records include certificates of competency, certificates of service, examination applications, and other documents. Forms vary, but they may include the following details: name certificate number birth date birthplace issue port issue date address examination date history of service (dates, vessels, occupations, years in service) Some of the information is included on the back of the certificates, and some documents in a seaman’s folder have not been indexed, so when you find a record, use the arrows to browse surrounding documents to make sure you see all the records available. You may want to browse through an entire roll since the original folders were sometimes filed in random order. -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
