    1. [DUBLIN-CITY] Re surname/Family name changes
    2. Margaret Doyle
    3. Hi, the possibilties for change of name are endless. Sometimes names were written the way they were heard, ie, Brew could be written as Bru. My Gran's name was Goff on her birth cert + Gough on her Marriage cert. A lady's surname is Lamb but her Brother was convinced by his teacher in school, (a Christian Brother) that he was spelling his name wrong, hence he + his Children go by the name Lambe. While in hospital after giving birth to my Daughter, the hospital registrar asked me for a First name for baby, I told her it was Aisling and asked her to make sure she had the right spelling as this is the gaelic version. When I got her birth cert, the English version had been registered. So now she has to go by Aishling as this is what's on all her legal id documents. Keeping in mind the she was born 1979, I'd say these mistakes are still happening. Allways take into account that your Family may have gone under a different name. Maggie

    3. Hi Janice: Thanks for your comments, and like you mentioned the name variations can come from a variety of reasons. I consider any and all variations to the surnames that I am researching, so when I do search I do consider that possiblity from Sinit to Synnott After I sent my post, I Googled Annett and found out that it is a surname from Scotland http://www.houseofnames.com/annett-family-crest ----- Original Message ----- From: <CELTICTYGRESS@aol.com> To: <irl-dublin-city@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 30, 2012 3:18 PM Subject: Re: [DUBLIN-CITY] More R.I.C. men from Dublin > > Another thought...maybe the Irish born Annett's surname was inadvertently > changed to Sinnott at the time of immigration to USA???? 1. Re: [DUBLIN-CITY] More R.I.C. men from Dublin
    2. Another thought...maybe the Irish born Annett's surname was inadvertently changed to Sinnott at the time of immigration to USA???? Lots of reasons for that including the immigration agents' spelling as well the 'brogue' that could have been misunderstood. My ancecestors' surname was gaelic spelling in Ireland and at immigration it became anglicized. I think that often the immigrant was too shy to correct 'anyone' and accepted the change rather then make 'waves' and possibly face consequences. What do you think? 1. [DUBLIN-CITY] Re Browsing the census
    2. Margaret Doyle
    3. Hi, If you wish to know who lived at a certain address in 1901 or 1911, go to nationalarchives.ie then browse (instead of search) . For example, if you want to know who was living at 111 Townsend street, click on browse at the top of the page, then click either 1901 or 1911, then click on Dublin, then Trinity+then Townsend street, scroll down to 111. Then check dublinheritage/electoral roles to check if any Family were still there in 1939. Maggie

    3. Mary Archibald (note different spelling of surname) is on the 1901 census at Doyle's Court, Blackrock with husband John + 3 children, all born Wicklow except the youngest child, Ellen, born Co. Dublin c.1900. Mary is a widow by 1911. This looks like Ellen's birth info (Rathdown is in Co. Dublin):Ireland, Civil Registration Births Index, 1864-1958 Ireland, Civil Registration Births Index, 1864-1958 Name: Ellen Archbold Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1899 Registration district: Rathdown Birth Country: Ireland Volume: 2 Page: 775 FHL Film Number: 101067 Ellen is not on the 1911 census with the family, so may have died prior to this date. Do you know Mary's maiden name? If not, you can purchase Ellen's birth cert from www.groireland.ie which will give you this info. You can then look for the marriage of Mary and John, probably c. 1890 as Mary jnr (1st child?) was born c. 1892. From this you will get their parent's names. This may be John Archbold's death info (year of birth/age at death/area appears to be correct):Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958 Ireland, Civil Registration Deaths Index, 1864-1958 Name: John Archbold Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856 Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1907 Death Age: 51 Registration district: Rathdown Death Country: Ireland Volume: 2 Page: 736 FHL Film Number: 0101603Good luck in your search!
