Hi Gillian Sorry to be the bearer of further bad news but I think you are thinking of Civil registration starting in 1837 in England & Wales Registration of births only started in 1864 I am afraid Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Thank you for this information Nivard. > I think I will have to send for one of the children's birth certificate when > after 1837 do you have any way of locating a reference number for me or can > you advise me which is the best site to subscribe to in order to research > this information? > > The 'person with 'bond' in the name is not one of ours - that would be just > too easy, I guess. > Richard CARMICHAEL was a cousin and I have information on him, thanks for > your reply and help. > Gillian
Thank you for this information Nivard. I think I will have to send for one of the children's birth certificate when after 1837 do you have any way of locating a reference number for me or can you advise me which is the best site to subscribe to in order to research this information? The 'person with 'bond' in the name is not one of ours - that would be just too easy, I guess. Richard CARMICHAEL was a cousin and I have information on him, thanks for your reply and help. Alison Why don't you contact Leopardstown Park Hospital and ask if they have any records etc.? Explain your reason for being in touch. There is an email address on their Website at http://www.lph.ie/contact.php I would also suggest that you contact the Rector of Holy Trinity Church, Killiney, Co.Dublin as the Memorial Service was held in his parish church, and no doubt she was a parishioner. They also have a Website at http://www.holytrinitykilliney.org/ on which you will find a "contact" link. Joyce
Hallo, I am new to this list and although researched for a good few years, now I have a brick wall in Ireland and I have no experience of research through Irish records and do not know where to start. I would appreciate some help to find the name of the French lady who Hugh Richard CARMICHAEL married between 1830 and 1835 if the dates of his children are anything to go by. He was a Surgeon and after qualifying, started his professional like in the army, based in France where he married (?). He returned to Ireland and made a name for himself in the field of child birth and female diseases. He had 4 children, i) Hugh CARMICHAEL b.1835 Dublin ii) Helen Antoinette Marie CARMICHAEL b.1837 Dublin iii) Marguerite CARMICHAEL b.1840 Dublin iv) Elizabeth Hope CARMICHAEKL b. 1846 Dublin Thank you Gillie1302
Hello Cara Had actually seen this - and I gave them some info about her brothers - BUT I hadn't spotted the hospital bit....so she may have been working at the hospital? That's very possible. Especially with the body donation. That's new to me. However as you may have found, there's nothing else online about that.... So a) how to find out any more? and b) Why would she go to Jerusalem after the war? It doesn't seem a good time to be going there, a lot of upheaval just before the establishment of Israel, and she went on a US government ship...... Also I don't know when she came back. The hospital: "Founded in 1917 it was originally a "hospital sanatorium" for the care of "officers or men of His Majesty's Navy and Army"." "The hospital continued to operate for more than 50 years caring for ex-service personnel." Maybe this is a place to start...I have their email address. ----- Original Message ----- From: <irl-dublin-city-request@rootsweb.com> To: <irl-dublin-city@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2012 8:00 AM Subject: IRL-DUBLIN-CITY Digest, Vol 7, Issue 83 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Hello there. I have a new mystery. I found, on 'New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957' in Ancestry, a record of my father's cousin Stella DOWSE, in 1947, going to Jerusalem from the US. On the 'Marine Carp' an American government ship at the time. Definitely her, as the address and next of kin (Florence Dowse, nee Andrews) is just visible on the original. She was born in 1908 and lived at 5, Ardbrugh Villas, Dalkey, Dublin, all her life, dying only in 2008 at nearly 100. We have some vague family stories of her hush WWII work, but then a lot of things were 'hush' at the time - but what was this trip about? I know very little about her life or work, she's down as a governess on this record, but this seems a bit unlikely to both me and my sister. - any ideas, anyone? - Alison Looking for LITTLE, ANDREWS, MEMERY, BIRMINGHAM/BERMINGHAM in Dublin - esp. John ANDREWS b about 1820, pawnbroker.

The 1911 census is free on Ancestry.uk over the weekend. http://www.ancestry.co.uk/1911?AID=11058815&PID=5737308 I checked it out. After a search it asks for you name and email before you can see the records. That seemed to be pretty much all. So, if you have been wanted to try the English 1911 census, this is your chance. Hope you have some luck. BTW, this news came from Claire Santry's blog which I recommend. http://irish-genealogy-news.blogspot.com/2012/05/1911-census-for-england-wales-free-all.html Christina

Hi, We have just added Mount Jerome part 45. The photos and transcription file were all done by Yvonne Russell. She did a wonderful job, as always. To view the new set go to: http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/dublin/photos/tombstones/markers.htm Pick Mount Jerome at the top of the page. Also, our site search engine has run, so you can use it too. Regards, Christina http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ ===============================
Jeannette I presume you are thinking of the River Tolka in Dublin. However, I have had a look on the Internet, and there appears to be a ruin of Castle Sheppard in Co.Tipperary. See - http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/property-show.jsp?id=4586 and also http://www.castlesheppard.com/ The second link has a photo of the ruin. Hope this helps. Hello, all: I have just seen a TV programme which is relevant here - 'Victorian Pharmacy' with Ruth Goodman (pt 3). Afraid I cannot get it online....but part of this was about women apothecaries. Ruth pointed out that when licencing and examinations were brought in by a new law in Britain in 1868, women were not specifically excluded from these professions. And they proceeded to take advantage of this. I did a search for both and found in 1901 in Ireland, 8 women apothecaries and 38 chemists! How about that. - Alison.
Times were changing even in Ireland in 1900's so why not, be a chemist? Yes I feel women could be whatever they wanted to be, as long as they were brave enough to tread through the male domain of things. Cara
Dear Lister, I have been trying for many years to find out about my McCarthy descendants from Dublin. Thanks to a brilliant effort from Penne in New Zealand I have found out that Patrick McCarthy, who had come to Australia in 1836, was found guilty of something in the Berrima Court (Goulburn) on the 2nd May 1842 and was sentenced to 14 years and deported. It has now raised several questions about Patrick McCarthy. Where was he deported to? Where did his wife go to? What was his crime? What were his parents names? Thank you very much, Joe Crane Queensland. ( ps even a friendly return email would be great. jc.)
