Hello Kaye! I don't know where my Gormlys are from. Even family legend is unclear (is it Cork? Mayo?). My earliest known Gormly is my gg-grandfather Martin Vincent Gormly. He was a sailmaker for a time when he came to New York (1860 Census), but the family quickly migrated up to Canada around the time of the Civil War and it appears he was a school teacher there. He was married to Mary Jane Matthews and they had four known children. There were more teachers and a butcher, and other assorted occupations in the family. My Cassidy line is even more mysterious to me. Martin and Mary's son John James married Ellen (Elleanor) Cassidy. She was born in Canada, and I don't know where in Ireland her parents (Patrick Cassidy & Ellen Jones) were born. My tailors are my O'Byrne (Byrne) line. This line I have traced back to Dublin, and even after my ancestors came to New York many of them work as tailors in Manhattan. Thanks for your interest, Kaye.
