Hi Valerie, My g-g-grandfather's attestation (spelling ?) papers ( his sign-up form to the Royal Artillery in Dublin) just happened to be joined with his pension papers...giving lots of information not known to me previous. I knew from the census that he was in the R.A. and between the 1881 and 1891 census years, and that he was pensioned. I then looked in the national archive records between these years for his name in the pension records for the R.A. and found it. Since I don't live in the U.K., however, I had to find someone to go to Kew to search this for me. A friend of a friend did this for me ( for a large sum, might I add...so took a chance), but she ended up finding this and copied the original copy for me. This record gave me the clues of what year he started, his true age (down to the month), his parish, his occupation at time of sign-up. His pension gave me his address (which confirmed that this was one and the same person to my R.A. guy, his age of pension, his places of deployment, his physical appearance traits and reason for pension. This was fun for me to see, as I found he was stationed in many different places like the West Indies, India etc., in the years around 1850. What an adventure! I know from talking to others that some sign-up papers include: addresses, parents names, place of birth, marriage dates and names, and birth dates and names. Unfortunately, mine didn't include these. It was fortunate that my name of search wasn't a name like 'Smith', or it would have cost me more to search. Is this what you wanted to know? Hope this helps.
