Gill, Take a look at the site 1837online.com. Look for the overseas records and then the GRO Birth Indicies. If like my gggrandfather who was Irish and served the British army your ancestors should be there too. I found births for his children born in Toronto Canada, New Castle Jamaica and Dublin in these files. The records are British not Irish even tho the birth was in Dublin. The list will give you enough information to request the registration certificate in England. Good luck!
