Hi Lynne, Eugene is a French name I believe so he may have been born in France or parents may have been French. My husband's grandfather's name was Eugene and he was from France. There was a lot of travel between Ireland and France, particularly in the 1800's to early 1900's. Hello, Eugene according to the English Oxford Dictionary is Greek, the name means 'noble' 'well born'. There has been 4 Popes of this name. Eugenio has been common in Italy. Eugene has also been used in England. Eugenius occurs in list of early Kings of Scotland, but it then represents a Gael name (Ewen) You will find it in Ireland used with Owen, you might find your relative baptised Owen but know as Eugene as my grandfather was & another Eugene I found doing another families research.
