Hello There I am looking for information my grandfather Eugene I Beatty My grandfather was a second lieutenant in the first world war. Is there anywhere I could look to try and find him. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you tack care Lynne
The National Archives has a 2nd Lt Eugene Laurence Beatty. Are you sure about the middle initial of your Grandfather or is this the wrong chap? Description Medal card of Beatty, Eugene Laurence Corps Regiment No Rank Grenadier Guards 5356 Lance Serjeant Royal Irish Rifles Second Lieutenant His medal card is available for download as a PDF for £3.50 : http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_I d=1372942&queryType=1&resultcount=1 Looks like he was enlisted and was later commissioned. No sign of an entry in the War Graves commission website so looks like he survived the war. His commission would have been announced in the London or Belfast Gazette. There are too many Beatty entries in the online versions. There's a good intro to British Army ranks on wikipeida http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army_enlisted_rank_insignia You needed to be tall to be in the Grenadier Guards (or indeed and Guards regiment). His service number would indicate he was in the army before WWI. The experts on the Great War Forum may be able to give more info : http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/ Basic info on the RIR is available at http://www.1914-1918.net/ririfles.htm The National Archives has some material on Army officers service records. I believe that records for the Guards Regts were not destroyed during WWII and may be available too. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletURL=http% 3A%2F%2Fwww%2Enationalarchives%2Egov%2Euk%2Fcatalogue%2Fleaflets%2Fri2010%2E htm&lBack=-1 There seems to be a document that can be ordered re BEATTY E L F, 2/Lieut http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CAT LN=6&CATID=1615968&j=1 WO 339/33674 WO Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies Division within WO Armed forces service records WO 339 War Office: Officers' Services, First World War, Long Number Papers (numerical) Subseries within WO 339 OFFICERS SERVICES (INCLUDING CIVILIAN DEPENDANTS, AND MILITARY STAFF APPOINTMENTS): LONG NUMBER PAPERS Record Summary Scope and content BEATTY E L F, 2/Lieut Covering dates 1914-1917 John -----Original Message----- From: irl-dublin-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-dublin-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of lynne beattie Sent: 15 November 2006 14:30 To: irl-dublin@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-DUBLIN] My garndfather Hello There I am looking for information my grandfather Eugene I Beatty My grandfather was a second lieutenant in the first world war. Commissioned 13th Feb 1917 and showing in the London Gazette 14th March 1917 : http://www.gazettesonline.co.uk/archiveViewFrameSetup.asp?webType=0&PageDupl icate=n&issueNumber=29983&pageNumber=0&SearchFor=Beatty&selMedalType=&selHon ourType= Entered France on active service with the 1st Battalion Irish Guards on 17th August 1915. Awarded the standard medals 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Appears in the London Gazette again on 9th October, promoted from 2nd Lt to Temporary Lt 13th August 1918, transferring from I Gds to RIR. http://www.gazettesonline.co.uk/archiveViewFrameSetup.asp?webType=0&PageDupl icate=n&issueNumber=30943&pageNumber=0&SearchFor=E.
