Unfortunately, I'll never make it to Dublin so I'll have to work something else out. To add to my Irish research problems, my maternal greatgrandmother was born to Irish parents, but not in Ireland. She was born in Manchester, England in March of 1842 (according to her death certificate from Texas). At some point they moved to Dublin and she came to the USA (New Orleans) in 1853. In spite of the bump in the road, I really do appreciate your info. Penny ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike and Marg Newport" <newport7@blueyonder.co.uk> Penny I live in England but my Father was from Dublin. We were in Dublin in July doing Family History research which is how I found out about the censuses. In the National Archive in Bishop Street there are a lot of directories. I got information on my namesakes from directories dated 1788, 1824, 1839, 1846 & 1885, but I think there are more. Also at the same place are the 1901 & 1911 censuses. Apparently they released the 1911 census earlier than is normal due to the non-availability of all the pre 1901 censuses. Trouble with researching Irish roots that you really have to go there to do it. The Catholic Church will not allow their B D & M in the parish records to be extracted (as I understand it). One good thing I hear is that the 1901 Irish census is being transcribed for use on the internet. Hope that helps Mike -----Original Message----- Subject: Re: [IRL-DUBLIN] 1851 census Mike Thank you for responding. Do you know if there are Directories for those years? Penny ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike and Marg Newport" Penny My understanding is that all the Irish Censuses up to and including 1891 were pretty well totally destroyed during the troubles. I think only fragments of the 1841 & 1851 censuses survived. Researching Newport & Creed in Ireland Mike -----Original Message----- I am new to the list and I wonder if anyone has access to the 1851 census and an 1851 Directory. I am looking for James Conroy and his family. Wife = Betty Hoctor (Mary Elizabeth) Daughter = Sarah He may have a son a couple of years older than the daughter. I am also looking for the name Hoctor/Hocter. Penny (Charlotte NC USA)
Could anyone tell me if the 1851 Census is only for the Dublin area or would there be other places that it may be available?
