Bronwyn, Take a look at the site - findmypast.com. If your ancestor died in India he was likely there with the military and his record would be a British record rather than an Irish one. I have found many military records there for my Irish ancestors in the British services. If you find a record it should also show what unit he was with and that may lead you to a site for his military unit. Good luck in your search!
