    3. (I tried to send this earlier but it bounced .... ) Shirley, I sympathise. I too have a Belfast family named Hoffmann (originally from Bavaria) and it took many years just to work out a simple family tree. I did send away for one death certificate but it gave very limited information. Then I thought to look in both the old Belfast Directories and modern-day telephone directory, and wrote to the few Hoffmanns listed. I struck gold with one of them, not a Hoffmann but he once owned a business named Hoffmann and was able to give more information. There do not seem to be any descendants at all apart from possibly one man who went to America. I have not been able to trace him further after his initial arrival at Ellis Island, although I did discover the record of a 3-month visit by his parents and sister in 1921. Incidentally that record threw me as the parents gave totally different birthplaces to those I had discovered some years earlier! All the English/Irish records merely say "born in Germany"; it was family hearsay that it ! was Bavaria. Nancy in NZ > By now all of Ireland knows that I am researching the Joseph Holland family of Belfast. In all the 20+ years there has not been one person, except from England, that has said they might be remotely related to this family.

    3. Hi Nancy, How did you order the death certificate, and what did it contain? Was it an American Death Certificate? Was it from the 1900's? I am not sure where to start with ordering an Irish death certificate for the 1870's onward.
