Margaret I strongly disagree with you about LostCousins. With LC you don't have to pay up front - just register, enter your people on the census (not just your direct ancestors - they obscure cousins get best results), then when you find matches you don't know about you pay the fee - which at £10 is tiny a fraction of Ancestry. Nor do LC extract funds without your permission. To lump LC and Ancestry together like that is plainly ridiculous. Andy No connection, just a very happy member who no longer pays a sub, who finds the LC newsletter informative, and who has made contacts through LC! So went to do that to day, and guess what? they had automatically set the site to take over $400 out for a world class 12 month subscriptiopn~~~~ not a uk one worth $179..... They really are deceptive and they wonder why people get sceptical. And in trying to use it, ive not recieved one email contact from any that i wrote to, and ive not found any new information that i didnt already get elsewhere!!!! So i dont think the site is worth it. well thats my conclusion. AND my pet hate is all that American stuff you have to wade through. When all i want is UK. AGGHHHH/ As for Australian. well im annoyed that our own find my past site hasnt got that info, and we can get more up to date stuff if we go to the state lib! ary. Live and learn. In todays Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper is an announcement that says Records for free. More than 40 million military records will be aqvailabel fro free at ancestry.com.au this Anzac weekend. The website is encourageing Australians to open its collection of histroric service records from Australia, UK, Canada and the US. The public can access records of enlistment dates, battles fought, performance on the field, medals awarded and for those who did not return, final resting places. The records date back to 1793 and can give people and insight into their miltitary past and their ancestors achievments in battle. The records can be acessed simply by registering on the site and entering an ancestors name. I hope this may be of use to some of you, and I cant see why it wouldnt work for people overseas serching for relatives. Good luck Janet Gregurke in Australia [Non-text portions of this message ha! ve been removed] __._,_.___ Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post | Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (1) Recent Activity: Visit Your Group MARKETPLACE Stay on top of your group activity without leaving the page you're on - Get the Yahoo! Hi Andy Although I have no time for lost cousins myself I did wonder if the OP was mixing up Genesreunited and Lost Cousins? As to Ancestry taking funds without permission? put simply they don't When you sign up for a trial you give them permission to charge the card holder at the end of the trial period (whatever that may be) Surely anyone who gives their credit card details must realise the implications? I have been with Ancestry for some years and having tried most if not all available genealogy sites, consider Ancestry far and away the best, also the most cost effective Once a year Ancestry warn me a month in advance giving plenty of time to cancel should I wish to , they also have a freephone telephone number and an email address If people don't read the terms and conditions they can hardly blame someone else Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Margaret I strongly disagree with you about LostCousins. Hi Nivard I basically agree with you on Ancestry. They did have a reputation for sneaking the renewals past you, but that was some years back. I've never had a problem myself (unlike some ISPs I could mention!) And of course, the data they have is invaluable. What is surprising is how much of their information is actually free, not counting the information you can get from just looking at the indices. Where would we be without folks like them. BTW I think I read the days of PAF are numbered as the new FamilySearch Trees facility is intended to take over. Best Wishes, Andy.
