I don't mind paying for information and had a subscription to ancestry for several years. My problem was that when I tried to cancel my subscription, my visa continued to be debited..for several months. Emails and phone calls got nowhere. Thankfully my card expired and I finally could stop paying! Ancestry should offer an option of paying for a predetermined period, and then it terminates. Some want everything for free and in 30yrs of researching I have learned there is not always free. The only thing that I get for free is my program that I keep my genealogy in. It is called Personal Ancestral File-comes in 6 different languages and never cost a penny Just go on line and download and it is wonderful. As to Ancestry taking funds without permission? put simply they don't When you sign up for a trial you give them permission to charge the card holder at the end of the trial period (whatever that may be) Surely anyone who gives their credit card details must realise the implications? I have been with Ancestry for some years and having tried most if not all available genealogy sites, consider Ancestry far and away the best, also the most cost effective Once a year Ancestry warn me a month in advance giving plenty of time to cancel should I wish to , they also have a freephone telephone number and an email address If people don't read the terms and conditions they can hardly blame someone else Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Margaret I strongly disagree with you about LostCousins. With LC you don't have to pay up front - just register, enter your people on the census (not just your direct ancestors - they obscure cousins get best results), then when you find matches you don't know about you pay the fee - which at £10 is tiny a fraction of Ancestry. Nor do LC extract funds without your permission. To lump LC and Ancestry together like that is plainly ridiculous. Andy No connection, just a very happy member who no longer pays a sub, who finds the LC newsletter informative, and who has made contacts through LC! ****************************** ATTENTION TO ALL:- Do any of you ever get to the bottom of this mail?, and do you remove the details that do not apply to your mail and change the SUBJECT LINE for best useage of ARCHIVED MATERIALS. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ----- No virus found in this message. Your Card should have stopped it, call them and not ancestry <G> and you wouldn't have been out so much money <G> That said I have been a member there for 11 years sometimes with only basic mostly with a World sub and they manage to get the right amount out <G> Eliz On Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 3:47 PM, Julie Boyd <[email protected]> wrote: > I don't mind paying for information and had a subscription to ancestry for several years.
