My worst names for searching are POOLE, CAMBRIDGE and WAKEFIELD which brings up thousands of unrelated sites. I have tried so many things to get around this but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Hi Marg and all First thing to say is that there is not one absolute search that will work in all cases the same way Where you are searching the likes of google and similar try the first and last name as follows John.SMITH (fullstop between, with no gaps) Or "John SMITH" (also works for phrases) In some publications such as the Gazettes & Directories names are often recorded reversed so try SMITH.John or "SMITH John" Some use initials or a title so try "Mr J SMITH" or just "J SMITH" etc If you know your man was a silversmith for example a combined search of "John SMITH" and Silversmith OR "John SMITH" + Silversmith OR "John SMITH" + Silversmith + Dublin May help You can also use the minus sign to try and exclude unwanted words Such as CAMBRIDGE - Shire Although that can bring up some odd results Worth playing with though Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > My worst names for searching are POOLE, CAMBRIDGE and WAKEFIELD which brings > up thousands of unrelated sites.
