----- Original Message ----- From: "Cara_Links" <[email protected]> Interesting surname where do yours actually begin in Ireland Cheers Cara Hi Cara, Interesting indeed. The earliest I have traced them is Dublin. Frederick POOLE and Maria DRAKE had who I believe to be their first child, Frederick William in 1826 Parish of St Andrews, Dublin. My great grandfather, Edward Ore POOLE was born in 1827 although I have been unable to find his baptism or birth. They had Charles, Christopher, John and Charlotte Maria baptised between 1828 and 1841. Frederick William had 14 children, Charles had 9, all born in Dublin. I haven't yet found the others marriages or children. They were an interesting bunch. The son, Frederick William POOLE, a tailor, and Sophia FANNIN were the parents of Joseph POOLE born 26 August 1855 who was charged with the murder of John Kenny and hanged at Richmond Bridewell 18 Dec 1883. He was later found to be innocent but to late. There is a plaque commemorating Joseph on the side of what was Richmond Prison and I believe is now a college. I have a copy of the last letter Joseph wrote to his family and friends before he was hanged. The police were already watching young Joe as he was a member of the Fenians as were numerous other family members. Capt. Christy Poole, Vincent Poole and John Poole participated in the 1916 Easter Rising. John's son, James Connolly Poole, b 1917, was named after the Fenian, James Connolly. Young James joined NaFianna Eireann. He was arrested in the Dublin mountains with others and served time in Arbour Hill. After his release he was back in the IRA and was interned in the Currah for three years in the 1940's. >From the 1911 census records and other documents I find my Pooles living at 8 Gloucester St., 5 Rutland St., 50 Marlborough, 93 Foley. When my gr grandfather, Edward Ore Poole and Susan Killfoyle had their first child in 1846 they were living at Graham's Row, Dublin. My POOLE research has been quite a journey for me. Firstly, I was not aware that the family was Roman Catholic and certainly didn't know they were all so heavily involved with the Republican Movement. Research is not always easy from this side of the big pond but with so much information available on line now along with writing letters I will continue to pick away at it. Finding where old Fred and Maria were baptised and married may take a long while but one day I may find them. And who knows where. Marg >From the Beautiful British Columbia Cariboo Region, Canada
