Hi all A new database on Ancestry a birthplace search for Dublin gets 1,965 hits A keyword search for Dublin gets 4,828 (as many certificates were issued from Dublin) The database includes the certificates and more About Great Britain, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927 This database contains master and mate certificates issued to merchant seamen by the British Board of Trade. What You May Find in the Records Great Britain has long been known for its maritime prowess in both military and commercial spheres. The certificates and other documents included in this database were issued to merchant seamen who qualified as masters or mates aboard merchant ships. Records include certificates of competency, certificates of service, examination applications, and other documents. Forms vary, but they may include the following details: name certificate number birth date birthplace issue port issue date address examination date history of service (dates, vessels, occupations, years in service) Some of the information is included on the back of the certificates, and some documents in a seaman’s folder have not been indexed, so when you find a record, use the arrows to browse surrounding documents to make sure you see all the records available. You may want to browse through an entire roll since the original folders were sometimes filed in random order. -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

This census covers the areas of Dublin City North and Dublin City South. The original record, which still exists, but is in very poor condition, has been indexed by Dr Chart in two hard bound volumes. These records have been indexed by parish, by street name and then by head householder. They are available at the National Archives in Dublin at CEN 1851/18/1-2. As some of my known residents of Dublin for this year of 1851 are not listed in the online version I am assuming that they were not the head of the household so it would be interesting to find out who was the head of the household for a particular address. I am wondering if there are any volunteers who would be prepared to do a few lookups for me please as I am " a bit far away ". Cheers from Valerie in sunny Sydney

I have found a copy of this book at an American University - UD -Madison Campus who looked up the record for me. My question now is: The 4 churches mentioned are: St Andrew 1672-1800, St Anne 1719-1800, St Audoen 1672-1800 and St Bride 1632-1800. Do these names and dates suggest which might be the religion ?
