    3. There is another possible explanation. Frequently, when a child died another subsequent child was given the same name. Have seen this many times in my own family. Would a child of 12 be used as a witness? 2. Oh, Jennette, Eureka! Many, many thanks for your answer. You've relieved one of my many genealogical itches. More questions: How do you have access to the Freeman's Journal archives? Did you see no mention of "witness Joseph Curtis age 12, reported by Thomas Curtis"? Thanks again. 2. Hello All, I'm researching the Dublin family of Gardiner Curtis (b abt 1816, d 1874*) and his wife Catherine Hawkins.** I've been led to believe that "Catherine Curtis, nee Hawkins" "relict of Gardiner Curtis" "died 1878" "at 170,Grt Britain Street, witness Joseph Curtis age 12, reported by Thomas Curtis." The source is said to be the Freeman's Journal. I want to verify the information and the source. My Gardiner and Catherine had sons Thomas and William Joseph (in addition to nine other known children). A discordant fact is that their William Joseph was born and baptized in 1854 at Dublin COI St. Mary,** which would make him age 24 in 1878. One explanation might be an error in the Journal's notice. Another might be an error by my informant. Still another might be that this is not the particular Catherine whom I'm researching, though to me that's doubtful. I know that there's a pay-for-view site for access to the Journal, and the LDS Library has some digital records that are accessible only from the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. Does anyone know a less expensive way to search the Freeman Journal's archives? Thanks for any advice. *familysearch.org ** numerous children's baptisms at churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie PJ, in Texas

    3. June As the Ralph's came from Wexford and the Keating Family were Co Carlow have you proposed this question to these lists, as it would appear perhaps that they simply married in Dublin for convenience. If my memory is serving me correctly I am sure there is a person on the Carlow or was on the Carlow list 6 months back looking at the Ralph family, which of course although the marriage record says wexford, perhaps they were part of that family that came also from Carlow. These are just suggestions for you to think about Perhaps a search of these said Lists archives may assist you also That is Carlow and Wexford ......... 1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Estimating death date from index volume number
    2. Hello list, As we say over here, I'm working in the weeds these days. That is, I'm searching for every crumb I can find (to mix my metaphors). These entries came from familysearch.org, "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958": Gardiner Curtis, patriarch: Death registered 1874, age 58, North Dublin Reg. Dist.; Vol. 12, Pg. 362 Gardiner Curtis, patriarch's son: Death registered 1874, age 28, North Dublin Reg. Dist.; Vol. 7, Pg. 452 Note that both deaths were registered in 1874. What do the index volume numbers signify? Does a volume number signify a specific month of the year? If not that, would a death entered in volume 7 have definitely occurred before a death entered in volume 12? Help me get out of these weeds, if you can. PJ, in Texas

    1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Gardiner Curtis in Dublin, Ireland, and Suffolk, England
    2. Hello List, I'm looking for thoughts about possible relationships between Irish and English Curtis families that used an unusual identical or similar male forename. My questions are: What's the likelihood that these families are related in some way? Was there migration of note by people from Suffolk Co., England, to Dublin city or county? Here's why I ask: I'm researching the Dublin-city family of the patriarch Gardiner Curtis. The oldest documented information I have for him is his death record, registered 1874 in Dublin North. On that record his estimated birth year was 1816.* The patriarch had a son named Gardiner (birth on death record est. 1846)*, and the patriarch had another son Thomas who had a son named Gardiner (born 1874).** I've also collected a bit of information* on a Gardiner Curtis, born in 1797 in Suffolk, England, with parents Richard Curtis and Mary Baker Curtis, and on a Gardiner Curtis christened in 1823 in Suffolk, England, with parents Gardiner Curtis and Anne Curtis. Some other entries for these Suffolk people had the name spelled Gardner rather than Gardiner. * familysearch.com, historical records ** churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie, Dublin St. Mary Pro. Any thoughts? Thanks. PJ, in Texas
