    2. Jon Burke
    3. Many thanks for posting this Info Dan, although there are none of my BURKE ancestors listed in 1838. WILLIAM BURKE is listed as decesased in 1854 on his son Edward's marriage certificate, so its only your earlier list I'm interested in at this point. 3. Hi Valerie, My g-g-grandfather's attestation (spelling ?) papers ( his sign-up form to the Royal Artillery in Dublin) just happened to be joined with his pension papers...giving lots of information not known to me previous. I knew from the census that he was in the R.A. and between the 1881 and 1891 census years, and that he was pensioned. I then looked in the national archive records between these years for his name in the pension records for the R.A. and found it. Since I don't live in the U.K., however, I had to find someone to go to Kew to search this for me. A friend of a friend did this for me ( for a large sum, might I add...so took a chance), but she ended up finding this and copied the original copy for me. This record gave me the clues of what year he started, his true age (down to the month), his parish, his occupation at time of sign-up. His pension gave me his address (which confirmed that this was one and the same person to my R.A. guy, his age of pension, his places of deployment, his physical appearance traits and reason for pension. This was fun for me to see, as I found he was stationed in many different places like the West Indies, India etc., in the years around 1850. What an adventure! I know from talking to others that some sign-up papers include: addresses, parents names, place of birth, marriage dates and names, and birth dates and names. Unfortunately, mine didn't include these. It was fortunate that my name of search wasn't a name like 'Smith', or it would have cost me more to search. Is this what you wanted to know? Hope this helps. 3. Hi All, Regarding Tailors from Dublin... I don't know if these will help, but there seems to be a lot of interest in Dublin tailors, so here are links to a couple of pages from the Pettigrew & Oulton's 1838 Dublin Directory and for the Thom's 1873 Dublin Directory. Both are under the "Trades" sections...and these are the listings for Tailors. http://homepage.fcgnetworks.net/dkng/Dublin-Tailors-1838.gif http://homepage.fcgnetworks.net/dkng/Dublin-Tailors-1873.gif If you have trouble viewing these, please feel free to email me directly and I'll try emailing you the files. 3. I am hoping some one can help me or suggest the next move. 1. DEATH: HUGHES: At Dublin in her seventy fifth year of her age, the beloved mother of Professor Hughes, and widow of the late P H Hughes Esq. formerly of Corfu, Santa Maria and Zante. ®149 Illustrated Australian News, April 20th 1874 p 71 2. " A general search was made of the death of Martha HUGHES in ? Dublin in the index of the Superintendent Registrar's Office 1873-1874 with a nil result. It would appear that the death is not registered. " 3. DEATH NOTICE: none found in the Irish Times 1 Jun 1873-20 Apr 1874 - some may be missing. Searched 1 Jan - 30 Apr 1874 for death in Irish Times in NL Dublin. 4. BURIAL: Not Deans Grange LDS Film # 906129 1865-1889. Letter 24 Aug 1993 stating no death found. Not Mt Jerome LDS Film # 0911810 1837-1876 no burial found. Not Glasnevin Cemetery - also checked by phone by Dean's Grange to Glasnevin Cemetery, no burial found. I am wondering what the procedure was for reporting a death during this period of time and place - eg was it through the local Court House where there may be a record ? I am hoping to find her date of death and burial ??????? Cheers from Valerie in sunny Sydney. 1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Gallagher: Tobacconists/Milnery Shop @ 32 Stoney Batter in Dublin
    2. Hello to Kaye, I am not sure what your information source is but I was wondering if it might have my paternal Great Grandmother's parents' business listed. John date of birth unknown, and Mary (Smith) Gallagher- born 1828, had a business at 32 Stoney Batter. Dad was always told they were in the Milnery business. My paper sources are several census records (1901 and 1911.) Mary Smith Gallagher was listed as a shopkeeper- age 70 in 1901. Mary's death certificate says she was a tobacconist and husband John Gallagher, died before 1901, was a Mason. One of the daughters Elizabeth was listed at that same address as a Dressmaker in 1901, and shopkeeper in 1911. Today it's a fireplace fixtures and accessories store. Any clues would be most appreciated! Susan
