    1. [IRL-DUBLIN] Leather workers in Dublin City
    2. JenniferCoull
    3. The Dublin list is really bouncing at the moment with all these occupations! I am looking for a leather dresser/leather seller in Dublin around the years 1830 - 1840 and again around 1850 -1860. (During the period in between he appears to have come to England with his family to work in the leather industry in firstly Leicestershire, and later Yorkshire.) The name is WITHERS either John or Joseph. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated. Jenny

    3. Re: WITHERS, Hi Jenny, There is a John WHITE at 60 Back Lane who was a leather cutter & seller, but no WITHERS. In fact there was only one 'hit' on a WITHERS anywhere in the 1838 P&O Dublin Directory. There was an Anne WITHERS who was a Milliner & Dress Maker at 7 Eastmoreland-Place in Dublin in 1838. Apparently WITHERS is a rare name for Dublin. There were two WETHERS who were clergy, but no other hits. Any chance there are other spellings, or name variations for WITHERS? 2. Hello Kaye! I don't know where my Gormlys are from. Even family legend is unclear (is it Cork? Mayo?). My earliest known Gormly is my gg-grandfather Martin Vincent Gormly. He was a sailmaker for a time when he came to New York (1860 Census), but the family quickly migrated up to Canada around the time of the Civil War and it appears he was a school teacher there. He was married to Mary Jane Matthews and they had four known children. There were more teachers and a butcher, and other assorted occupations in the family. My Cassidy line is even more mysterious to me. Martin and Mary's son John James married Ellen (Elleanor) Cassidy. She was born in Canada, and I don't know where in Ireland her parents (Patrick Cassidy & Ellen Jones) were born. My tailors are my O'Byrne (Byrne) line. This line I have traced back to Dublin, and even after my ancestors came to New York many of them work as tailors in Manhattan. Thanks for your interest, Kaye.

    1. [IRL-DUBLIN] MICHAEL GEOGHEGAN TAILOR
    2. Josi Birkbeck
    3. Through thirty years of the census he was a tailor died at 76 apparently still working in Westminster London Said he was born in Ireland 1806 the three census ages varies between dates to 1809. The spellings found on various certificates and Poor law records shows his surname variations as Geygan, Gaggen, Gaygan Geggan and Gagan I suppose it could be worse? At least he kept the first letter.. Jo

    3. Hi Folks, In looking through the trade listings for Tailors in Dublin there are some cross references to Clothiers, so I'm posting the clips for the List of Clothiers from the 1838 Pettigrew & Oultons & 1873 Thoms Dublin City directories. http://homepage.fcgnetworks.net/dkng/Dublin-Clothiers-1838.gif http://homepage.fcgnetworks.net/dkng/Dublin-Clothiers-1873.gif I don't see any Burkes here, but this may help someone else looking for Tailors & Clothiers from Dublin.
