The National Archives has a 2nd Lt Eugene Laurence Beatty. Are you sure about the middle initial of your Grandfather or is this the wrong chap? Description Medal card of Beatty, Eugene Laurence Corps Regiment No Rank Grenadier Guards 5356 Lance Serjeant Royal Irish Rifles Second Lieutenant His medal card is available for download as a PDF for £3.50 : http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_I d=1372942&queryType=1&resultcount=1 Looks like he was enlisted and was later commissioned. No sign of an entry in the War Graves commission website so looks like he survived the war. His commission would have been announced in the London or Belfast Gazette. There are too many Beatty entries in the online versions. There's a good intro to British Army ranks on wikipeida http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army_enlisted_rank_insignia You needed to be tall to be in the Grenadier Guards (or indeed and Guards regiment). His service number would indicate he was in the army before WWI. The experts on the Great War Forum may be able to give more info : http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/ Basic info on the RIR is available at http://www.1914-1918.net/ririfles.htm The National Archives has some material on Army officers service records. I believe that records for the Guards Regts were not destroyed during WWII and may be available too. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletURL=http% 3A%2F%2Fwww%2Enationalarchives%2Egov%2Euk%2Fcatalogue%2Fleaflets%2Fri2010%2E htm&lBack=-1 There seems to be a document that can be ordered re BEATTY E L F, 2/Lieut http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CAT LN=6&CATID=1615968&j=1 WO 339/33674 WO Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies Division within WO Armed forces service records WO 339 War Office: Officers' Services, First World War, Long Number Papers (numerical) Subseries within WO 339 OFFICERS SERVICES (INCLUDING CIVILIAN DEPENDANTS, AND MILITARY STAFF APPOINTMENTS): LONG NUMBER PAPERS Record Summary Scope and content BEATTY E L F, 2/Lieut Covering dates 1914-1917 John -----Original Message----- From: irl-dublin-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:irl-dublin-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of lynne beattie Sent: 15 November 2006 14:30 To: irl-dublin@rootsweb.com Subject: [IRL-DUBLIN] My garndfather Hello There I am looking for information my grandfather Eugene I Beatty My grandfather was a second lieutenant in the first world war. For the Trinity College graduates, try getting a copy of Alumni Dublinensis from your local library. It lists all students back to 1500's. You could try the GRO in Dublin as they registered deaths abroad. They are usually at the very end of the indexes for a particular year. If she had property in her own right in Ireland there might me a will. Indexes in the National Archives in Dublin. Just suggestions. I'm seeking information on a Cunningham family of Dublin, Ireland. The father's name was Patrick or Patrice, and the mother's name was Catherine Smith (nee). They had a daughter named Margaret (Maggie) who was born in 1848 in Dublin who married a Henry Loveridge of Michigan and lived in Muskegon, Michigan after coming to the United States on a boat called the Tarifa in 1866, with her sisters Catherine and either Margaret or Maggie (10 years older), and possibly a brother named Thomas. Catherine Cunningham (the daughter of Patrick and Catherine Smith Cunningham) also moved to Michigan and married a fellow named Hughes and later a Michael Holan, I believe. Does anyone have any additional information on this family? All tips will be appreciated. Thanks so much! Hi, I have been trying to find the death of my maternal grandmother for sometime now, so far I have been unable to find where she died and was buried. Her husband (my grandfather) was James Peter Keogh of Wicklow who was RQMS of the first Btn Royal Dublin Fusiliers. I believe that she might have died in India prior to the regiment returning to the UK in 1914 or Dublin as my mother and her sisters went to school somewhere in Dublin as teenagers. I have tried India for a death record without success so I am wondering if in fact she did die in Dublin and there might be a record of her death there. I feel as there was a war on the children were returned to Dublin and she most probably died between 1911 and 1920. Hope someone can help me as I have been searching for Rosanna for years - I can't even find where and when she married my grandfather - this she must have done to enable James to take her to India and Egypt. Thanking you. Regards, Jim Gully (Adelaide)
Jim, Take a look at this site: http://www.findmypast.com/MilitaryStartSearchServlet. It was previously known as 1837online.com. I was able to locate birth information for children of my ggreat-grandfather who served with the British military during the period 1860's-1870's. Look for the overseas records. For this ancestor since he was attached to a British regiment all the records were British even though he was serving in various places. I did not find his marriage record on these lists. The marriage record was in Ireland. Contact me directly at gewilks at yahoo.com if you want me to look at the sheets I already have printed out. Have you contacted his regiment? Good luck! Hello Dublin, This is a call for help from Australia. I am researching my wife's ancestors in Ireland. This is an amazingly tragic story of Thomas Minogue sometime Mannix, who was born in Co. Clare perhaps Scarriff, and his wife Margaret Mary Ann Harriet Hewitt ( Margaret and/or Mary were sometimes used but not always ) who was born in Tipperary both c. 1812, He was a journey-man cabinet maker, who was in love with the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth ( Cleary ).He was sent to Farney Castle to do some repairs on furniture. The folk lore says that because he was catholic and she not there were difficulties regarding marriage. They ran away and married I don't know where. In 1837 they were living in Dublin, perhaps he worked in Queen St. at his trade , they had six children when the plague hit them. When the wife Margaret recovered her husband Thomas and three children were dead. According to Margaret's death certificate, who died in Bendigo Australia, the children were --- James c1833-1837 Patrick c1834-1874. Mary Ann c1835-1885, John c1836-1837. Margaret c1836- ---- ( she may have married Robert Duff 1863 Nenagh Co.Tipperary ) Elizabeth c1837-1837. Thomas appears to have died in May 1837. Margaret obtained work as a matron, through a friend of her father, at Kilmainham Goal outside Dublin. She didn't like the work and took her three children to Wolverhampton England , eventually she and two children, then adults in the 1850s, separately sailed to Australia. Patrick married in Wolverhampton to Sarah Collins of Tipperary ,before sailing to Australia. I would very much like to verify what of this story is true. Can some one please help a couple of Australian descendants of ancestors from Counties Clare, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Westmeath ? Peter and Marie Bergin.
Hello Catherine, I have been searching for my g/g/grandfather MARTIN HOOLEY and its variants for a long time. I found a Martin HOOLEYb.1811 in Ireland, in Cheshire in the 1841 Census, as a mason, which corresponds with his trade on his sons marriage cert. and also another Martin HOOLY in the 1851 Census of St. Marks Dublin but cannot find his death in any of the BMDs for England Wales or Ireland. Would you kindly check if he is buried in Deansgrange Cemetery in Blacklock Co Dublin please. His son Thomas was born in Ireland in 1836 and I have his marriage cert. and censuses in Wales but no info about his parents or where they came from before this date. Hi, Mary Street is on the North side of Dublin, in the heart of the city center. On a Dublin map it runs from Caple Street to Liffey Street upper. It is in the parish of Saint Mary. There also was a Mary's Abbey, Mary's Lane, Mary's Place,And Mary's Street Little, side shoots of the main Street. Most of the premises belong to people treading in the area, so unless you think your ancestor had a shop, they could have had a room above shops Regards Kaye > > I am new to the list. Looking for Thomas and Mary Finarty who lived on St Mary Street in Dublin. Also does that street still exist? > > Patti Simpson Taylor > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to IRL-DUBLIN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > ----------------------------------------------------------------- Find the home of your dreams with eircom net property Sign up for email alerts now http://www.eircom.net/propertyalerts
