Hello Irene, There are McHenry's in other places, but they come from the north. I would certainly stay with Dublin, especially as he states it a number of times. When did he come out? Have you only looked at shipping into N.S.W. Swan Hill is in Victoria My gggrandmother was a mysterey to us, but she eventually turned up on a shipping list, it was just hard to read. Hi Robyn No, I must say I haven't looked for McHenrys in any other counties as Thomas birthplace was given as Dublin on both his marriage and death certificates. As I said, I have the idea he may be a convict, so perhaps he lied about his birthplace. I'll check that out. Hello List, I am trying to locate details of the background of Thomas Beckham who was executed in 1862 for murder. I understand the goal records or other details may be in the archives in Dublin. Does anyone know if the records for Limerick or criminals from there will be there? Data known.....ages given below not 100% certain. Thomas Beckham was 61 at the time of the murder and the murder took place on the 16th of May 1862. He only got married the day before he was hung to the woman he had lived with for 25 years also in 1862.He had an accomplice called Walsh, both were hired by Mr Delane to murder his neighbour Mr Fitzgerald. Earlier in 1850 he was in trouble and was supposed to have been sent to Bermuda, but seems to have gone to Australia! ( this entry is from the online index only, the records have not been viewed ) Thomas Beckham aged 40 Place of trial: Limerick Date: 09/07/1850 Crime: robbery sentence: transportation 15 years document reference: TR10, P155 comments: Convict detained on `Bride' ship 00/05/1851 (written as is on data....May 1851) and ordered to be discharged 03/09/1857 So I am looking for further details of either event and especially his family, at least 1 child, a son who was present at the execution. His wife's name is unknown. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated here. Tom Beckham Beckham Family History
I'm sending my Fayle query through again with added dates. Janet This is a long-standing, probably hopeless ancestress mystery on my father's side. I want to fill in all the blanks (including parents, grandparents, etc.) for her. What I know about her so far: 1. As Elizabeth Fayle, she transferred in 1761 from Edenderry Monthly Meeting, near Dublin, Ireland, to Exeter Monthly Meeting, PA. (I have her transfer letter, signed by a number of members, including several with surname Fayle). 2. She met and married TOWNSEND MATTHEWS, SR. in Exeter, PA, in 1761. He was temporarily ex-communicated from Quaker Church for bearing arms in French and Indian War, so on Feb/ 26. 1761 she was precautioned by Exeter MM not to marry a non-Quaker I have that transcript from the minutes, as well as the one dated March 26, 1761, in which ELIZABETH FAYLE NOW ("ALIAS") MATTHEWS was dropped from Exeter MM's membership. 3. Hinshaw in Virginia notes them both as being fully restored to their former Quakerism and notes scattered throughout show that they evidently continued as practicing Quakers the rest of their lives. What we know about her husband, whose family was able to take his line clear back to England and, happily for me, made it available at FamilySearch: 1. Townsend Matthews, Sr. - born 1737 Berks, PA to Robert Matthews and Mary Coles 2. Married Elizabeth Fayle - Exeter, PA - 1760 (Exeter MM notes seem to indicate 1761; so far can't find the marriage record) 3. Before he died in 1808 in Greenbriar, West VA (where are they buried ????) they had the following children: (1) Emele (Amelia?) Matthews - b. ca 1762, Berks, PA -d. Rockingham, VA 1790 - Married Ebenezer Henton [this is my line, faily well documented from this point on] (2) Ezekial Matthews - b. ca 1765, Berks, PA - marr. Jane McSparvin (3) Mary Matthews - b. ca 1768, Berks, PA (4) Robert Matthews - b. ca 1771, probably Berks, PA - marr. Nancy (Mathews) Green - ????? (5) Joseph Matthews - b. ca 1773, Berks, PA (6) Townsend M. Matthews - b. ca 1774, Berks, PA - marr. 6 Nov 1843, Raccoon Tp, Gallia Co,, OH - Nancy Williams (7) John Matthews - b. ca 1775, Berks, PA (8) Elizabeth Matthews - b. ca 1777, Berks, PA I hope I copied all this data correctly from the FamilySearch site. Elizabeth Fayle - born where? when? parents? why did she come to America? when and where did she die? where is she buried? Janet

Hi Mary Thank you so much for your offer of help. I have been trying to find this family for about 8 yrs, so hope that there is a connection. Thomas spent his first 7 yrs in NSW, then went to Vic but goodness knows what children he might have had before he did that. Again, many thanks and I will await your reply eagerly. Hi Listers I wonder if anyone can help me. My gg grandfather, Thomas McHENRY, is a real mystery-man. The first I know of him is that he married in Swan Hill New South Wales here in Australia, his first two children were born in Bendigo Victoria and his third in Beechworth - a Gold-mining town in Victoria. His marriage and death certs give the information that he was born in Dublin - County or City, I don't know - in approx 1820/24, his parents were William McHENRY and Mary KENNEDY and he spent his first seven years in Australia in New South Wales. Of course, that was a favourite sentence for transportation but I can't find him as a convict. I can't find how he arrived in Australia, and can trace no McHENRYs in any of Ireland. Does anyone have any ideas of how I should trace this family or make suggestions as to where to look. I have looked for this man for eight years and can't believe that a person can just appear out of the blue with no inkling of his origins. Any help would be much appreciated. I downloaded the medal card and it shows as I Gds (Irish Guards) rather than Grenadier Guards. Commissioned 13th Feb 1917 and showing in the London Gazette 14th March 1917 : http://www.gazettesonline.co.uk/archiveViewFrameSetup.asp?webType=0&PageDupl icate=n&issueNumber=29983&pageNumber=0&SearchFor=Beatty&selMedalType=&selHon ourType= Entered France on active service with the 1st Battalion Irish Guards on 17th August 1915. Awarded the standard medals 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Appears in the London Gazette again on 9th October, promoted from 2nd Lt to Temporary Lt 13th August 1918, transferring from I Gds to RIR. http://www.gazettesonline.co.uk/archiveViewFrameSetup.asp?webType=0&PageDupl icate=n&issueNumber=30943&pageNumber=0&SearchFor=E. Are you sure about the middle initial of your Grandfather or is this the wrong chap? Description Medal card of Beatty, Eugene Laurence Corps Regiment No Rank Grenadier Guards 5356 Lance Serjeant Royal Irish Rifles Second Lieutenant His medal card is available for download as a PDF for £3.50 : http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_I d=1372942&queryType=1&resultcount=1 Looks like he was enlisted and was later commissioned. No sign of an entry in the War Graves commission website so looks like he survived the war. His commission would have been announced in the London or Belfast Gazette. There are too many Beatty entries in the online versions. There's a good intro to British Army ranks on wikipeida http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Army_enlisted_rank_insignia You needed to be tall to be in the Grenadier Guards (or indeed and Guards regiment). His service number would indicate he was in the army before WWI. Hi All, I reckon that I'm looking for the impossible, but hope that someone on the List may help. My 2nd Gt Grandmother Harriet BURLEY (daughter of a Preston BURLEY, unproved) was supposedly born 1825 in Dublin according to the 1851 England census (Wellingore Lincolnshire), She's not found on the 1841 (England), so it may be correct. Harriet was married to Thomas OGDEN at Wellingore on 24 Dec 1849 (again citing Dublin) and had 5 children but was dead by July 1858. Has anyone come across a BURLEY family over in the Dublin area during that period from which Harriet may have heralded? I'm up a creek without a paddle on this line.
